Just seen this on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-ASTRA-VXR-DAMAGED-R...

Looking at the HPI website it says this:

Although write-offs can legitimately be allowed back on the road, almost half are beyond repair. Look for the ones that have passed an independent inspection, such as those on HPI's Condition Inspected register. Since 1997, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has provided classification of damage to vehicles that have been written off. Category 'A' or 'B' must never reappear on the road, whilst 'C' and 'D' may do so following proper repair, passing an independent Thatcham-approved structural examination

So this guy selling the car is saying that it is roadworthy because it had a vic check, which is essentially just an identity check.
I feel sorry for any prospective buyer

They don't have to be crushed, but they can't be returned to the road.

Non-structural parts may be re-used on other vehicles.

It's been a cat B write off, repaired, and now has cracks in both bumpers, and a missing fog light, who wouldn't be tempted by this clearly well maintained and cared for vehicle?

I thought Cat A had to be crushed, Cat B can be stripped for parts.

May be wrong though...

Nope, you're right. CAT A must be destroyed, no parts can be salvaged. CAT B must be destroyed or broken for some [non-structural] spares, but cannot be returned to the road.

Now there is one fog light missing from front bumper, a small graze on back bumper and a small crack on front bumper
Looks like he's already made a start.

The OH's car was declared a Cat B a few weeks ago. A bus went into the back of it at a junction. He drove it home so it wasn't too bad, but the chassis was warped so it can't go back on the road.

When he put 'key less', I assumed he didn't have the keys for it!

Never buy a car with questionable history from an illiterate chav retard. It's a rule that has worked well for me over the years.

Lol! I just emailed him for fun asking for photos of the damage, and mentioning that I'd read on the HPI site that a VIC check doesnt ensure roadworthyness. His reply:

sorry no photo of damage, the damaged was side and you have to have vic before you can get log book. this has had vic and log book has been issued by dvla i have it in my name full log book.

There's no law saying cat A or B cars have to be crushed or broken up, its perfectly legal to return these vehicles to the road. The insurance industry have a voluntary code of practice stating they will only sell these cars to licensed dismantlers who agree they will not sell the cars on as repairable salvage. Not all insurers subscribe to this code of practice and some (unscrupulous) salvage agents may repair or sell these vehicles.

I've seen similar on eBay. Spotted a CAT B Golf TSI once and emailed the seller, got a very abusive reply back.

That Astra looks like a total shed, wouldn't touch it. Needs to be crushed, cars like this shouldn't be on the road.
