Hi Everyone,

Can someone confirm that these are not halogen headlights on my Mini? I think they are pretty dim at the moment and if they're not up to scratch I'll upgrade to Halogens.

That looks like a sealed lamp. If you want better lights you will have to buy new light units and bulbs.

Original equipment sealed beam lamps.

You will need to buy a conversion kit to mount halogens.

Yeah they are sealed beams. I upgraded mine as soon as I got my Mini last year. vast difference with halogens and a very simple conversion to do yourself.

Kit is only £30ish isn't it? Not a lot anyway.

A mate bought some a while back.

Cheaper here:

And the crystal clear ones are even better - got them fitted to the Caterham.

Shouldn't need to uprate the loom if using snesible, legal, bulbs. No harm in doing so though - relays feeding full voltage to the lamps can make quite a difference.

Must say this part of the relays and the loom is losing me a little bit! What exactly is the alteration to be made in ideal circumstances?

Cheers

The wiring will be rated on the amount of current that it can safely take. Sealed beams are usually rated at a power of 45 and 50 watts for low and high beam respectively.

Dividing the power by the supply voltage will give the current. Asuming 12 volts supply the sealed beam will take 3.75 and 4.12 amps.

H4 halogen twin filament bulbs are usually 55 and 60 watts, which will take 4.58 and 5 amps.

You could try an automotive wire calculator here:

On a 1994 car, I'd be very surprised if the original sealed beam headlamps weren't halogen anyway. Still, as long as your new ones are brighter that sounds like a win to me.

Did I say 1994? I mean 1992.

They may have been, but after a road test tonight they were far inferior to my new ones.
