Motorway speed limit could be raised to 80mph.

Speed limits on the motorway could be increased to 80mph in a bid to increase productivity, Philip Hammond, the transport secretary, has suggested.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/8350157/M...

Mr Hammond said that safety might no longer be the sole consideration in judging how fast cars can go and that gains to the economy from shorter journey times should also be taken into account.

Which would appear to be a sensible approach, no?

Because if I could do 80 on my commute, I could get through the Blackwall Tunnel so much faster rolleyes

I'll believe it when I see it.
Far to sensible for any government to ever put forwards.

Isn't most commercial traffic limited to 56mph anyway?

I think they'd find productivity would also go up if they sorted out the damn lane discipline too.

So ban territory would be 110+?

Oh and while they are at it make the M6 Toll unrestricted. Wait would this mean the Scameras on motorways would have to go back to Holland to be calibrated for 80mph? Which would not be cost effective. Which would mean they would be ditched.

Anyway hopefully this does become reality.

Or maybe they just want us to use more fuel (at that higher speed) and pay even more tax?

Now where did I leave that tinfoil hat?

Google news says the government is not going to reducing motorway speed to conserve fuel, with the global shortage, apparantly Spain has already done it. If they are saying they will not do it, then why bring it up?

Watch this space.

Won't make any difference to me - I always drive my Porsche at 70 otherwise I can't hear the radio!

Won't make any difference to me either- I routinely cruise at 155mph so I get places quicker.

Sorry Smudger, that term is lost on me, can you explain it to me. Just can't say I have come across that before. Hopefully the suggestion for reduced speed is the usual bullst from the media.

So basically back to how everyone used to drive before labour got power and fked everyone over and stopped lowering the year on year accident/injury rates.

So if it's currently:

70 mph Limit
79 mph Fixed Penalty
96 mph Summons

Will that go up to 80, 89 and 106?

Same thing is happening here in NL right now - first trials have just begun close to Amsterdam and the rest of the motorway network will trial it soon.

Been raised from 120kph (75mph) to 130kph (81mph).

Government doing sensible thing shocker!
That's the last thing you need on the A10 around Amsterdam, that's worse even than the M25, people turn psycho on there, driving 2" from the car in front. Tailgating taken to a new level frown

So this is going to increase the speed differential between commercial vehicles and cars, and that's a good thing right?

Is it still 130kph in France in the dry and 110 in the wet? I like this idea.

Sounds like an intresting idea but to be honest the way Petrol Prices are at this current time I would be less likley to go faster as it hits my MPG.

Also I would suggest that they would take more of a hard line when dealing with speeders, i.e keep the automatic ban at 100+ MPH and more points below that speed.

Will wait with intrest, more higher speed RTC's to deal with redcard

130MPH in the dry and 110MPH in the wet could work over here yes.
