I have a private plate on a relative's car which has just been crashed and is likely to be written off. Is it better to apply to retain the plate now, or wait until the insurance company take the car? I presume they'll take the V5C, that's why I'm asking. Thanks.

Apply now before the insurance company take it

Very slim chance of getting it once they have the v5

Tell them you want it, get it on retention. You'll need a letter saying they don't want it...

Impossible.

From DVLA's point of view the plate "belongs" to the registered keeper of the car.

You need to get the registered keeper to put the plate on retention with you named as "nominee".
