Greasy nipples and tight UJs, ooh missus!
Discussion
Hello all,
Half shaft this time. Decided to re grease the prop and half shaft and what a nightmare it's turning out to be. The prop was a doddle and all went as expected, but the half shafts are in a league of their own. I have two problems and any advice/ tips would be great!
1) Wheel side nipple (love that word so I'll use it a few times here). So, as I was saying the wheel side nipple of the half shaft is accessible with the old flexi grease pipe but I can't get any grease to enter the UJ. Swapped to the nipple on the other side of the car and the same problem. No amount of pumping the G gun will allow grease into these end UJs. Someone else must have had this problem before?
2) Nipple access on the disk side, or lack of it. There is no way I'm going to get the end of the grease gun onto these nipples. Even with the nut removed access is still too tight. What's the solution here, apart from remove the half shafts to grease, which surely can't be the solution?
Regards Andy.

Can't get grease in.
Poke the hole, it is blocked with old grease. Or stick in a new nipple.
they are all 1/4" 28tpi taper fit. They come in varying angles too.
Can't get acces to nipple.
Flexi extension on grease gun. A bit difficut to use as it becomes a three hand operation unless you have an air grease gun.
But as soon as you mention nipples I'm sure someone will come to your aid.

Jammed nipples, not what you want! Never thought about the nipples being stuck shut or bunged up, might be worth a look I guess.
I'm using a flexi pipe on the G gun but you can't physically fit the head between the bolt & UJ to actually get onto the nipple. It's too tight a space.
Thanks for the nipple size.

Depending on where the wheel/chassis is supported the gap between the flanges will change - so to get on to the nipple reliably you may have to turn the wheel until the gap opens up.
Once the grease gun and nipple are engaged the pressure of the GG should ensure a feed of grease to the bearing. Pump until you see grease coming out of one of the end caps - then wipe off the excess.

"I've always used a fixed hose gun, and never had a problem getting it to fit. just had to rotate to get the best angle."
Now maybe this is where the problem is. The car was on ramps IE the suspension was still compressed. Maybe if I jack the car up and let the wheels drop down, this will cause a greater angle at the top of the UJ and I might be able to get the nozzle in. If not I guess Jeffs idea is worth a bash.

Agree with having to rotate to get best angle of attack; also found last time I did mine that the hand-powered grease gun wasn't shifting the old grease through the joint at any great speed so used the air-fed one and even that took a load of stabbing at the button to get clean grease oozing out.
That one in the picture has been installed the wrong way round!!! You can have them either sticking towards or away from the disk, to make it either hard or easy. Same goes for the outer ones, best to have them pointing towards the centre of the car.
I too use a flexi hose on my grease gun and don't usually have a problem once it's clamped onto the nipple (as it were...)
