So I take it to a certain independent Audi dealer in Sighthill Edinburgh, they identify the fault as 2 rear lambda probes need replacing in addition to one engine mount. Yes Sir we can fix that and it will be £850!! Should I be looking around for a cheaper quote?

I know this sounds crazy but take to the main dealers and see what price they quote. That way you can see just how crazy or not the price is.

Just got 2 other quotes from highly recommended good independents, both £200 cheaper.

Try calling A for Audi. They are very good, and very reasonable with their prices!

thats about right,i have found that the dealers are really going mental with prices. they deserve all the ridicule they get. a customer of mine had her drivers door mirror broken in a minor accident-vauxhall gave her a quote for £400 +vat..i did the same job-all vauxhall parts, mirror glass, back plate and main body for £190.70.. and made a small profit.the vauxhall parts van driver could not believe his own companies quote..ranting

I booked the first one who came back to me, but the second, with approximately the same price gave me some more feedback in that, in his opinion, it's very unlikely for both lambda probes to go at the same time and he wanted to re-check. Unfortunately because he was second to respond ( a third has not responded yet, depite prompting) and not knowing if he was going to respond, I went with the first and booked it in, I won't change that but will bear the other in mind for the future. I'm deliberately not naming names, but when I queried the original quote with the workshop manager, he went on about hte others not being able to reset fault codes etc and how they had over £150k of equipment in the workshop (relevence?), both the independents who quoted laterly have the correct diagnostic and fault resetting equipment. Original independent workshop manager said if I got a better quote go back and he will do his best to match it....NO he had his chance and just lost a customer.

Well AVW Autocentre did the work and found that only one lambda probe was f**ked in addition to the engine mount (I didn't know they were so sophisticated) resulting in a final bill of £450, almost half of what I was originally quoted.

Matt's Spitfire (aptly named) had a blockage to one of the Webbers idle jets (I think, he's off to Poland for a stag party this weekend) now all I have to do is fix the oil leak in the vette!

good result. very seldom do the two sensors collapse. when i got home that day i was still convinced that it could be a jet prob.plus the fact that we had avoided a total burn out- spitfire style.... what about the house... and mrs vette g..
see you soon H .

^^ This is why VW & Audi garages generally are so bad - a lack of basic knowledge & tradesmanship.

All you need is a laptop and a £200 cable to competently read fault codes, make diagnoses and re-set faults, not '£150k of equipment'.

Idiots the lot. rolleyes

I've got an older version of this:
http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_GDVAG.html

Paid £28 for it years ago, it reads and if you let it do three full passes will clear the fault codes.

Ideal for the home mechanic as it displays exactly the same code definition as the garage will have
