Anyone have any thoughts on good roller cab and tool kits at a relatively reasonable price?

I would love to get a full on snap-on kit, but my budget is up to about £500, rather than £2500!! I've found a Sealey roller cab with a 240 piece kit with it for ~£250 on eBay, but I'm not sure what Sealey quality is like? It looks OK, but I have no experience with them at all.

Ultimately, I want to get a decent starter kit now and add bits as and when I can afford them/if Santa is kind to me. I also want to keep it all to one brand to help keep things neat and organised in the cab too.

Oh, and the bigger the better too!!

Plenty swear on Halfords Professional range as they are decent enough and give a lifetime guarantee - which they DO honour.

Their cheapest range of tool chests aren't great, though. I have one. A bit flimsy.

It's like everything, you get what you pay for, but that's a good starting point i guess

I've built up a relatively decent collection of tools as and when i've needed to buy them, but I'm starting to find that I've had to buy 2 things at £20 instead of one decent one at £35.

I suppose they've fitted the purpose that I needed them for at the time (young, skint, trying to renovate first house etc), but now I can afford a little better quality, that's what i want to go for.

I have Teng and Sealey stuff and it seems very well made. The Teng set is 10 years old and has seen a fair bit of use.

If i wanted a roller cabinet, i would go to machine mart and get one. Might be more expensive than halfrauds, but they are solid

Just a little out of budget(!), but my dream would be to have this metric set on one side of the garage:

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&t...

And then this imperial set on the other:

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&t...

Pure tool porn.

Just had a look on Machine Mart website and they seem to have some pretty good stuff there! The below two are looking promising, although I can't really see why the bottom one would be over £100 more? Probably my stingy side coming out again, but would that really be worth paying 30% odd more for?

I've had some genuine Snap On tool box bargains on Ebay - worth keeping an eye out for boxes local to yourself 'cause some sellers don't want to get involved in posting / couriers. Also, track down your local Snap On man, he may get trade-ins that are worth having.

As said, the Halfords Pro tools are pretty good - I really like their spanners, superb for the money. I also tend to use my halfords quarter drive ratchet and sockets more than my Snap On ones...

It depends on how flexible you can be with your budget, but personally, I'd pay the extra for the chest with the ball bearing drawer runners.

I have one of the Machine Mart chests and I'm glad I spent the extra. It's probably coming on 8 years old or something now, has seen some abuse and been left at times in the wet and the drawers are still smooth.

I went for Halford's Pro range tools at the same time and they're all still holding up great too.

Big thumbs up for both.

I've got a snap on man that lives a few doors down!! I don't know him so not sure if he'd take to kindly to me knocking his door and asking for a bargain!! Never know though, don't ask, don't get etc!

I've got a constant eye on eBay and have seen snap-ons go for really cheap and really, REALLY expensive!

The cab is the main thing to begin with as I can fill it slowly over the years, but I want to get one with drawer spaces for certain manufacturers tools to fit neatly into, does that make sense?

I think the premium range cabinet is that little bit better than the standard range, hence the cost difference. Mind you, for the average person the standard is more than enough anyway

If you are a professional mechanic, using your tools day in day out, then you need to buy the best, but if you are a hobby mechanic, then it's a waste of money.

Don't buy rubbish, of course, but stuff like Halfords Professional, Facom, and Teng is nice, well made kit that will last well and be pleasant to use. As time goes buy and you find yourself using the same few spanners and drivers time and time again, just buy individual Snap-On tools for those most-used items.

That's what I was thinking. Just got it in my mind that the cheaper one's that I have bought as 'bargains' in the past have just been utter clunge, so would prefer to pay a little more now, but only if it's worth it!
