E60 545 M Sport steering wheel badge dented ! Help
Discussion
Hi
I was a little over excited when informing a Rover driver that it was not very nice to pull out of a side turning without looking at all when i am only 20 feet away !! Good job the 545 has great stoppers !!! Anyway the BMW badge in the middle of the steering wheel ended up a little concave after this event, so can any one tell me if its easy to get the badge out so i can push the dent out ?? Dont want to set the air bag off or do something wrong just because i dont know the right way to do it.
Thanks
Mike

Hi,
The easiest way indeed would be to purchase one of the stick on over the top badges. I'm going by the badge that's found on E46/E39 round airbags. The original badge is 'built in' to the plastic of the airbag cover, there's a hidden 'lip' of the badge covered by that airbag cover plastic, so to try and pry it out, and then somehow push in a replacement will be hard without damaging the airbag cover plastics.
There's been talk about badges stuck on, and then in the event of an incident, if the airbag deploys, that a stuck on badge will be propelled into your face. Whilst I have no way of testing that, I did however have a deployed airbag from an E46 M3 after I bought it's steering wheel. I looked carefully at the airbag and saw that in the event of deployment, the top part of the circular piece is the 'hinge' and the east of the cover 'lifts' up as the airbag itself just behind it starts to fill up with air as it's deployed. I think as it does so, it 'pushes' up the airbag cover itself. I don't see how or where a part of the airbag 'punches' the back of the cover with such force to overcome the adhesive of a stuck on badge on the front. If the badge was fitted poorly or with prit stick or something perhaps! but not the very tacky and adhesives used on such replacement badges.
Cheers, Dennis!
