Hello

A friend of mine is in the enviable position of seeking a fast point-to-point car. His criteria are small for this car (and hence I imagine the choice will be large).

The car must be sub 8 seconds 0-60 in standard trim (i.e. no modified cars)
It should have reasonable service costs and be ok/happy for fairly regular abuse
It should come in under £3k on the road
It should be 'sporty' rather than a cruiser
It should hold its value reasonably well (so needs to be past the 'new' car depreciation stages)

So - suggestions?

I can start the list with the following (add more/critique etc - I just need a list to get some idea of my friends preferences!):

Porsche 944 turbo / S2 (although this is on the edge of the budget)
Mr2 MK2 turbo
Corrado VR6
Caterham/Westfield/Robin Hood kit car types
CRX VTEC (MK2)
Mitsubishi GTO
Saab 9-5 Aero

Thanks
Ian

Any of the rally-reps (Scooby/Mitsu) getting down below £3k yet? You won't find a Caterham that cheap, and probably not a Westfield either.

Sunny / Pulsar GTI-R

Don't think a 944 Turbo for £3k will buy much.

If Point "A" or Point "B" are anywhere near a town or B-road I'd say a Fiat Cinquecento Sporting with a Bravo 80 1.4 16V conversion. Such a good chassis you can thread needles through traffic and off the clock top speed.

yes Whether you can find one that hasn't been barried is another question though.

I'd buy the best Impreza turbo I could for that money, and as always, buy on condition not mileage.

Definitely a 200SX. They hold their value well as well - so very many of them are modified, so an unmolested one is a rare thing, which means it'll be sought-after in the future, and even today they're in high demand amongst drift-racers, so there are always potential buyers.

Ive got one, they are fantastic cars.
Another option: Lotus Elan Turbo SE M100 if you can find one.

I would put some effort into looking at a 944. If you buy a good one it won't be too expensive on maintenance. Obv not as cheap as some Jap cars perhaps.

Also I don't think your friend needs to go to the 944 Turbo necessarily. If he got a nice Lux / S / S2 they have enough horsepower to fulfil the 'sporting' moniker and aren't burdened with loads of heavy stuff like modern hatches are etc.

Much better chance of finding a straight unmodified example. You might get a bit of wheel swapping for later cars but that is about it.

I say this as I had a Lux and loved it. Should hold its value and take being used every day. At the same time my Dad has one in a barn waiting restoration (paint & seats, not the mechanicals really) and it fires up first time when the battery is reconnected, amazingly tough cars.

Only dogs that need lots of money spending on them, or have been to the moon and back.

+1 for a Lotus Elan M100 SE - you should be able to find one for about 3 grand.

Must be something Japanese and turbo-y.

If you can find one without half of Halfords bolted to it
