'Best' point to point car sub £3k?
Discussion
Hello
A friend of mine is in the enviable position of seeking a fast point-to-point car. His criteria are small for this car (and hence I imagine the choice will be large).
The car must be sub 8 seconds 0-60 in standard trim (i.e. no modified cars)
It should have reasonable service costs and be ok/happy for fairly regular abuse
It should come in under £3k on the road
It should be 'sporty' rather than a cruiser
It should hold its value reasonably well (so needs to be past the 'new' car depreciation stages)
So - suggestions?
I can start the list with the following (add more/critique etc - I just need a list to get some idea of my friends preferences!):
Porsche 944 turbo / S2 (although this is on the edge of the budget)
Mr2 MK2 turbo
Corrado VR6
Caterham/Westfield/Robin Hood kit car types
CRX VTEC (MK2)
Mitsubishi GTO
Saab 9-5 Aero
Thanks
Ian

Another option: Lotus Elan Turbo SE M100 if you can find one.
I would put some effort into looking at a 944. If you buy a good one it won't be too expensive on maintenance. Obv not as cheap as some Jap cars perhaps.
Also I don't think your friend needs to go to the 944 Turbo necessarily. If he got a nice Lux / S / S2 they have enough horsepower to fulfil the 'sporting' moniker and aren't burdened with loads of heavy stuff like modern hatches are etc.
Much better chance of finding a straight unmodified example. You might get a bit of wheel swapping for later cars but that is about it.
I say this as I had a Lux and loved it. Should hold its value and take being used every day. At the same time my Dad has one in a barn waiting restoration (paint & seats, not the mechanicals really) and it fires up first time when the battery is reconnected, amazingly tough cars.
