After some Info/advice on Mx5's..
Discussion
From what I've seen posted all over Pistonheads, the mx5 Is a cracking Car!?
I'm nearly 19 and have been driving for about 18 months now so am a new driver, would Insurance be sky high?
I love the Idea of buying a 'drivers car' and learning how to make good progress safely and having a f*cking good laugh at the same time!
Is there much difference between the Mk1 and Mk2? Mk1's seem to go for about £1500 which would mean I'd have a bit left over to play with (coilovers, get It aligned and set up properly, wheels etc)
1.6? 1.8?
Just after any general Info or even comments telling me how great they are lol.
Thanks, Butch.

Hi Butch!
I was in the exact same boat as you mate. Except i was 20 when i got my 5. (only just 20) Im insured with admiral multicar atm and pay £980, and thats with 3 years n/c. I have a silver mark 2 and love it to bits! They are so much fun to drive. Ive only had it since september and allready been on a few pistonhead meets. I hear alot of 5 owners say that the eunos can be a bit more expensive as far as insurace goes compared to a mazda. Think this is due to them being an import??? I plan to do a shed load to my car this year and cant wait to start
Regards Doddy

I'm 20, no NCB (Due to someone crashing into the back of me and going 50/50 somehow) been driving 2 years.. £2900 a year insurance
ahhhh man that sucks
Worth the money though right!?
(Thats not a dodgy advert pitch for some insurance company
)I love it, it costs alot in insurance (Probably less with some NCB) but the pounds per smile are well worth it.

I think there is something wrong with my laptop, because I'm sure that says you pay £2900 a year insurance?

Awesome cars, although you might end up getting stung on the insurance as a young driver (if you can get it at all, I know places like Quinn won't insure anyone under 30 on an MX5). It'd be a great car to get learning in, if you remember the fact that it has limits, as do you. Getting in one and thinking you'll be sliding about like a turd on grease is a bad idea and you'll quickly come unstuck.
As for the differences between the mkI and mkII, you'll probably find a MkI for less but it's easier to find a good mkII IMO as there are more around and they're newer. They're both fairly similar though, definitely a closer link than the heavier and taller Mk3. There is little between them; I find the Mk2 has the slightly stiffer chassis but other than that there is little to separate them other than some styling touches. I quite like the TVR-ish look of the MkII which was another plus, but I don't think you could go far wrong with either as both will be an excellent proposition if you can get insured on them.

Mk II is a little more refined than Mk1 if you'll be doing a lot of motorway mileage, otherwise it's just slightly different bodywork and interior. Mk II has slightly more powerful engine but weighs slightly more so not really noticeable.
I think insurance will be your main problem area, I paid £800 when 24 with 3 years no claims, down to just under £500 the following year, that was for a Mk2.5 so Mk1 may be a little cheaper to insure.

Jesus H Christ. That's more than I paid for the car, insurance and remedial work put together!!

It's the reason I can't do too much to it as paying just over £250 a month on just insurance starts to get expensive!
