Me and a friend have just finished removing the swirl flaps from my E46 320d.

Whilst in the process I changed the "loo roll" oil separator for the vortex type and gave the EGR valve a quick clean whilst it was disconnected from the manifold. Nothing thorough, but cleared out a lot of the gunk.

All seemed to go well despite a bit of a tussle getting the EGR valve back onto the manifold. Everything was tight and connected in it's correct place. Before all the covers were put back in place, the engine was turned over and all seemed fine. After finishing the job I drove the car around 12 miles home with no problem.

I've just had a quick run out and now the yellow engine warning light comes on. In the handbook it says "Engine - Exhaust emission values have deteriorated. Have the system checked."

Could this be purely because the figures will now be reading differently or is it possible that something hasn't been put back in place correctly?
