..."in self defence"

Jalopnik said:
A Brazilian man faces several charges after speeding his Volkswagen through a crowd of hundreds of bicyclists Friday evening in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Given the sheer force of the attack caught on video, it's amazing no riders were killed.

An attorney for the driver of the black VW Golf, Ricardo Leis, 47, says he was only driving in self-defense, claiming the bicyclists were threatening he and his 15-year-old son who was riding in the passenger's seat. The melee sent eight bicyclists to the hospital and injured dozens more.
Warning: the video is rather violent.

Apologies if it's a repost, the Google search didn't reveal it and the PH search seems to be broken again)

Well that's one way to overtake hehe

Any reason why the cyclists were blockading the road? The guy was clearly suffering from the mental to do that but curious!

These people that start screaming like babies in these situations really annoy me because they just make a bad situation worse.

From the title I would guess it was a critical mass event. They do it in London too. The whole point is to stop the traffic. It seems this guy took exception to it. Appalling behaviour on his part. Agree or disagree with the concept that is not the way to make a rebuttal.

What is the point of the critical mass events? Is it purely to irritate other road users or is there a message behind it?

It's to say how bad cars are, so we'll make things worse for a moment.

Have a look. I think it depends on the individual why they are there. I know quite a few who have been on the london ones and they see it as a big social event. In that regard it sounds quite good. You also have the car haters and militant sorts who are there for political reasons. It is supposed to be a social thing but en masse so cars have to take bicycles seriously not just a rolling width restriction. It isn't supposed to wind car drivers up but no doubt it does when they use some of the techniques they do to prioritise junctions.
