Hey, just bought a new car that comes with a private plate which i neither want or like, so how would i go abouts selling it? There are website that will valuate and buy the old plate, but how do you go about getting a new 'regular' number plate registered to the car? Also is there an way to guarantee getting the best price?

Once you transfer the plate from the car, the DVLA will either issue it's original number if it had one, or a unique new one.

So that will happen once the company buy the plate? How much does this cost to get the new plate?

You could put the number on retention (certificate) which will mean £25 plus the £80 transfer fee (paid in advance, to allow it to then be transferred from the certificate to another car). Then see whether a dealer will buy it or advertise it for you. Whether they buy/advertise generally depends on what the actual number is and how much of a market there will be for it.
Once it's on retention, you need to renew it every 12 months @ £25 per year (can renew for more than 1 year, but still £25 pa.). There's also a £25 fee when you change the nominee on the retention certificate.

Alternatively, a dealer might advertise it (with the number still on the car) and if they get a buyer, they'll sort the transfer off of your car and DVLA will issue you a new number. You could also try a private advert, and then sort the paperwork if you get a buyer.
How much you get obviously depends on what the number is.
Why not contact a few dealers to start with and see whether it's a number they'd be interested in.

Thanks thats great thumbup

I will see what the valuations come back like because i really have no idea how much it would be worth, and if its not worth anything will probably not be worth the effort. We shall see!

Flog on fleebay is the quickest way to get rid. Not even necessary to stick the plate on retention as the buyer may want to put straight on a car so you can do a straight transfer. Plate will be worth more if you do put it on retention however as it gives the new buyer options.

Ok so you won't get top dollar for the plate; think something in the order of 50% of the valuation the profesionals might offer and you won't be wide of the mark. If you're prepared to hang on for a while or get lucky obviously you might get more.

Good luck!

The most important question - What's the car?

2 seat sports car - no idea what's wrong with that!

I guess you could get a young 'ear doctor' who could want that - tbh, I doubt you'll get much money for it.

Is it that you actively don't want the plate or aren't too fussed and wondering about getting some £££ back?

If the latter, just leave it as I doubt it's worth the hassle. If the former - well, I guess I could put it on one of mine - it's not overly special mind!

Cheers

Had a quote back from one of these numberplate websites saying that they could advertise it on their site, and if it sells they will give me £400 for it! Having a look on their site it seems M30 EAR is for sale for £1200 so i guess thats their markup.

I agree with you though i don't think its a very good plate, but might be worth caling around a few more companies to see if they might buy it off me outright. I think i would do it if i could make a couple of hundred profit after the paperwork etc.

Not many of the companies out there will actually buy it from you. Most will advertise it and take a cut when it sells.

You could either look on the DVLA website, follow the link on this website's homepage or do a search and read one of the other 1,000,000,000,000 times this has been asked.

Bear in mind they will give you 400 sovs for it...but only when the damned thing sells - this could be a fair old while (several years) so if you don't want it on your car, you will spend some ££ on the retention and renewing it each year.

As I said, do you just want it off the car, or are you just trying to recoup some of the cost of the car? (nothing wrong with either!)

It's not worth a great deal, I'd probably eBay it to be honest.

99P, no reserve, probably get a couple of hundred for it.

Bit of both really, i'm not really fussed with it on the car but for the sake of the numberplate being different i would rather have £200 to spend on polybushes or something like that for it
