If you can see into the end of the catalyst, you can look for obvious substrate damage, which if it has been killed by a misfire etc will show up. But you can't really establish it's health (oxygen storage capacity) by just looking! (you need to fit it and record the ratio of upstream lambda "switches" to downstream lambda switches)
