Automatic gearbox on a mk1?
Discussion
I've been offered a 1.6 h reg mk1 in part exchange For my Saab, it looks in good shape (owner is on ph) but it comes with an auto box.
What is the box like? Does it destroy the nature of the car etc? Will it explode if you look at it too hard?
Also how much would you value a v spec eunos with 90k on the clock?

I've never driven one so can't comment, other than to say one of the strengths of the MX5 is it's superb gearchange and the need to work the gears to get the bets out of the engine. I'd imagine an auto will destroy the character of the car somewhat.
If it's cheap enough, however, perhaps you could convert it? Although manual boxes are cheap, I don't know how much of a pain it would be. Mine was originally an automatic and was converted to manual when being turbocharged.

Yes, one of the most exciting aspects of the car is the slick gear change and the adjustability of the throttle which makes smooth, swift changes a real pleasure. That and the fact the engine responds so well to being driven well, and the MX5 is one of those cars where you have to plan ahead and monitor your gearing when you're pressing on lead me to suspect an auto box would rob the car of some of it's charm.
I was just thinking about this when I was driving home from work tonight, as I marvelled at the position of the gearstick relative to your seating position and how short and precise the shift is. It's one of those things that make the MX5 an unforgettable car.

Not driven the auto. But there are changes to the engine as well as fitting the auto box. Slightly different cam or something. Which I presume they did to make the engine more suited to an auto.
Different compression ratio if I remember rightly, but not sure what else or what effect it had.A bit less top end power but a bit more mid-range and low down torque.
If you don't need an auto then hold out for a manual, there are plenty around so don't compromise. If you do need an Auto then from what I've heard the one in the MX5 is supposed to be pretty good and is very strong i.e. they don't break when you FI up to silly power
