3.1 million FPN's - at the rate they are 'saving' lives, there won't be enough room for all of us soon!

SPEED CAMERAS CATCH 40% MORE MOTORISTS

By James Hardy, Political Editor

SPEED cameras caught 40 per cent more drivers in one year, figures released yesterday show.

Home Office data revealed 94 per cent were for speeding offences while the rest were for disobeying traffic signs and signals.

But the increase in cameras is estimated to have saved 280 lives, helping cut fatalities and serious injuries by 35 per cent and reducing average speeds by 10 per cent. Figures for England and Wales in 2002 show cameras caught 1,499,600 drivers, up from 1,071,200.

Home Office minister Caroline Flint said: "Slowing down saves lives.

"Camera enforcement is intended not to catch people speeding but to reduce accidents and save lives."

Overall the number of motoring offences rose 11 per cent to a record 11.8million, including 3.1million fixed penalty notices. Edmund King, of the RAC, said: "Sending out millions of fines and penalty points does not necessarily improve road safety."

But the AA's Andrew Howard said: "Disqualifications remain the same. This may suggest drivers change their behaviour and don't offend again. If this is the case, cameras are having an effect on how we drive."

The Government says it will cut the annual death toll of 3,500 by 40 per cent in six years.

Best of luck to them, it's taken them 10 years of speed cameras to cut the death rate by 0%!

94% for speeding. 3.1m FPN's = 2.914m FPNs for speeding. 1.5m drivers caught = each driver got done twice on average.
Equals at lot of banned drivers this year.
Equals a failure of Government policy....

Also Equals £180m in cash ... nice earner.

Which they probably will, as anyone who can afford a car will have moved to somewhere better by then...

Some people must be REALLY cooking these figures!

Does anyone know how many scamera vans there are in each county? And how many counties there are in England and Wales?
This is a quick guess, please correct my errors!
I think there are about fifty counties?
Do each have two scamera vans or more?
Ive heard that the vans can catch upto 100 motorists an hour, but would 30 an hour be a reasonable average guess?
So:
30 x 2vans = 60
plus gatsos and police contributions would equall about 80 mototists an hour being caught in each county.
80 x 10hours per day = 800.
800 x 365 days = 292000.
292000 x 50 counties = 14600000 drivers caught.

I know im only guessing but i would say there are probably even more than this in reality, i expect some counties have more than two scam vans? Gwent must catch atleast 1000 drivers going over the severn bridges in and out of Wales every day. Thats 24% of the 1499600 total already!

If their figure of 1499600 is to be believed that would equate to roughly 8 motorists an hour in each county.
I dont think so!

I would love to see the camera partnerships independently audited, but then again so would their partners!

May I suggest that the cameras must all be faulty as clearly they are catching millions of drivers speeding?

You are way over the top. 8 an hour sounds about right.

Huh?

To use a motoring analogy: Engage brain before putting mouth into gear.

Unless of course she can explain exactly how speed cameras intend not to catch people speeding...

Yes , maybe the figures are for Gatso's only.

Each and every scam van certainly catches more than 8 an hour and upto 100 when they pick a nice DC or M-Way.
Scandalous!
