Been looking at booking a holiday for 2 sometime between July to as late as the start of October this year for 3k or less. Current option I’ve been looking into is to go and visit family in Canada (Vancouver) flights are coming in at a grand for both of us, by time we stay in hotels for about 10 nights, hire a car and factor in spending money gets me to about 3k I figure.

It’s got me thinking what else we could do for that kind of money (total budget). We don’t really have any particular holiday preference, can quite happily spend 2 weeks in a beach type resort or touring equally. One thing we haven’t done yet is a cruise and only here good things from people I know who’ve been. We’re 28 and 30.

To the motorbike showroom, and anything I had left after buying a bike on a hotel, coke and hookers.

Been to the Maldives a couple of times and 2 weeks probably is possible at a push going All Inclusive. Maldives has pretty much spoiled any future beach holiday as I don't think anything else can get close.

Komandoo is one of the places we've stayed before-great house reef. Also stayed at Kuredu one of the biggest Islands and generally seems to be seen as a bit of a Maldavian Butlins, but has resorts within the resort and I thought it was Awesome and much cheaper than Komandoo and the higher end islands.

Liking the idea of getting a yacht, also the safari and Zanzibar idea-but for 3k all in? I know Kenya itself is pretty cheap.

Our honeymoon in Zanzibar (without the safari) was £3000 in 2004 and to be honest you will pay at least anotther £1000 on top for the excursions required to see the island. To be honest, Kerala in Southern India is very similar in terms of "tropicality" and vastly cheaper because the locla economy operates on their values which is very very cheap. At 80 rupees to the £, I paid 5 rupees for a coffee at the airport! The average tuk-tuk ride locally will be around 50 rupees.

Plenty to do on the Keralan backwaters, visits to tea plantations, spice plantations, Neyyar Dam. Been twice and only children stop us returning again.

OK, maybe not up with the Maldives but far cheaper.

Sounds like Kerala could be worth a look, what's it like for being pestered on the beaches by local trying to flog you stuff?

ETA Sri Lanka has always seemed good value too, think the weather might be iffy going in what is our summer/September.

Good point, we always went in January. Locals are not particularly persistent and can be despatched with a gleam in their eye. There are bigger and more deserted beaches to find though which are hawker free.
