Hi All,
Thought I'd ask this in the forum where the traffic is more likely to prove fruitful! Do you ever pay any attention to the banner ads at the top or sides on PH? I am considering advertising what I think would be a relevant company/service to the users of this forum (have removed url from my profile before anyone accuses me of spam!) but am unsure if anyone would ever click through.

Now that the funds go to Haymarket rather than Ted, I am less inclined to take a punt without researching it first.

Feedback welcome.

Cheers

Have you asked PH whether they can let you know the hit rate on the links? It is fairly common for these figures to be published to make decisions for people in your situation a little easier.

I will ask, but as 104% of statistics are made up, I'll be slightly sceptical about what I'm told!

Hit rates are quite often massaged - they often include bounce rates as well, thats people who click on the banner, then click straight off again. These are no use to an advertiser

The cost per thousand impressions is fairly low, and any work we gained form it is likely to be reasonably sized, so it might be worth a try for a couple of months. We use some fairly advanced traffic monitoring software so we'll know how long any visitors stay on our site etc.

I guess I just need a banner that appeals to someone at the right moment in time when they are in the market for our services for it to be worthwhile.

Thanks for the input.

Can't speak for PH, but as a general rule 1% is an average click through ratio (1 ad clicked per 100 displayed). On specialist niche sites, where ads are targetted to the subject matter, you might get between 4% and 6% but it varies depending on site quality, no. of ads, placement of ads etc. Google Adsense (guidance for publishers of ads) gives some good guidance on such matters.

I don't click on adverts and I also run Firefox with ad/script blocking add-ons as well.

I dont click through on PH due to the placement of the ads but do on other sites. It depends on the rates really - we advertise through banners on a number of sites and the pick up balances the expense. Where the ads are targeted we understandably receive a better response.

1%+ sounds hugely ambitious to me. My experience of a 2,000,000+ page views per month, niche site is about 0.25%.

I think a fair portion of people use some form of adblock, or similar.

When it was run by Ted, and the adverts were of actual interest to me and were vetted for suitability for PH, this was the only site that I did click on the Ads for.

Now it's generic ste, no way - adblock.

Never. I turn them off with an ad blocker wherever possible. They're the equivalent of internet graffiti.
