Thinking about going for a complete re-wire whilst all the other works being done on the car, need some more leg room for anyone over 5ft2 in the passenger footwell so figure on putting a new loom in, has anyone started from scratch on a new loom or have any experiance with rover ones stripped down?? P.S I'm useless at electrics so any replies would have to be in simple English! thanks

Here's my take on the whole thing. I got an extra 6" of leg room.

Battery box was buit by CliveF to my design, battery is a small Oddysey and the fuseboard from Vehicle Wiring Products.

I didn't rewire the whole car - there was enough cable in the existing loom to reuse everything that wasn't engine related. I built a new loom for the engine when I put the new ECU in.

Thanks for the photo and reply, is there any particular reason you did not move the battery to the boot? giving more leg room.

I've done something ssimilar . ..

I've also got an Odyssey battery, which are 1/2 the width of a standard battery allowing much greater leg room in the footwell without the need to move the battery to the boot which for me compromised boot space.

I've replaced the angine harness completely with an after market ECU and also placed the ECU into the dash board above the glovebox, so further eleviating the mess of wires and looms in the footwell.

Access to the fuse box is now muc better as I don't have to fight the width of the standard battery and the ECU loom and for wiring in further hardware if required then I have space for it on top of the battery.

Mine was moved to the parcel shelf and all the fusing etc moved to the boot.
Dry sump/cdi/coil etc went in footwell - ala Tuscan racer.

Dulfords do a kit that moves the battery to the boot with a gell type battery like Johno's.
Much better battery and smaller/lighter (50%)

A

(water pipes over the ecu...a TVR speciality biggrin mine even had the a/c running over it. Literally.
Shudder

Hi Andy,
i spoke to Dulfords about their conversion and will most probably go with the gel battery in the boot, i'm more concerned about the loom as i would like to start from scratch what with the new ECU and fly by wire thats now been decided on. On a seperate note i went out in the LS powered 350 yesterday and to say its wet my appetite would be a major understatment, can't wait to get to Spa with you boys later in the year!!bounce

I didn't need more leg room that I got - I'm only 6'0 - and I want to keep all the boot space available for luggage. Besides, I don't really like the idea of having big cables that run the length of the car or having a battery in the same compartment as the fuel tank.

Ive done a similar thing, moved battery to boot above tank in the middle, fusebox behind passenger seat then just have a board in the footwell with the ecu (megasquirt) on and a proper relay holder.

Passengers can stretch feet right out now with ease smile

Is it really safe to put the battery in the boot? Rear-end shunt, leaking tank, sparking battery...no thanks!

Leaking tank!! Looks like the tank went awol as would of the battery, anyhow as andy pointed out earlier standard set up has water pipes and A/C if you have it running over electrics and battery. You can tell alot of thought went into placement. Hope everyone got out of that ok looks nasty.

Probably wouldn't have been any frictional sparks off the chassis and wheels then ! smile
