Corsa 1.0 3 pot rattling timing chain

I bought a vert tidy 05 plate one of these with 37k miles for my youngest, and had a visual health check done by the local Vauxhall dealers. They have reported this "from cold", and suggest that it could blow the engine - but "we can fix it for £750 +VAT". Now, i don't want to put my little darling in peril, nor do i want to pay for a replacement engine, but is this a case of them trying it on. Either with the work being needed, or the price. Is there another local indie who you would trust to confirm the diagnosis and price?

If the timing chain is rattling from cold then (since the car only has 37k miles on it) i'd suggest it was more likely to be the chain tensioner than the chain itself. I would imagine the tensioner is replaceable, and the part probably doesn't cost more than £50, so then it's simply a case of how much labour is involved in getting in there and doing it.

Yes, if the tensioner failed then in theory you could end up with a few bent valves but even that should cost less than £750 to fix!

I'll see if i can find out about the chain tensioner on the little 3 cylinder (which is a great engine by the way). I also know a place locally that would do a good job on it for sensible money.

Hmm, after a bit of googling it seems that timing chain rattles are quite a common fault on the 1.0 engine, but a new timing chain kit is around £120 and it should be 3 hours labour to fit.

So unless your local Vauxhall dealer is charging you £200 an hour, i'd suggest they're pulling the other one (the one with the bells on!)
