Gear Selection issues

Sorry if this has been asked I've searched PH, Google and the Bible with no joy.

Took the cover off the car for the first time in a few months - started fine, first time. Let her warm up a bit then tried to select reverse - just a loud grinding noise and unable to select any forward gears, gear lever moves okay but just won't "slot". No issues prior to today.

Clutch seems fine - i.e it depresses okay and doesn't feel any heavier or lighter than normal.

So just ring Garage or is there something I can check?

Try pumping the clutch for a bit, they do tend not to like be left over the winter and know some who wedge the clutch down with a stick over winter.

If that doesn't resolve you may find that the seals have gone hard and any amount of pumping won't allow enough pressure . .

It's unlikely to be anything to do with the gearbox as if it worked when it went in the garage, then apart form being cold it's not likely to have suffered any damage sitting there . .

I really must stop panicking every time something happens to her - if it was any other car I would have tried loads of things before posting.

A combination of pumping the clutch and pushing her back and forth (she felt like she was in gear) seems to have done the trick and she's been out and about for the first time this year.

Many Griffs/Chims have problems engaging reverse, quite offten hearing unwelcome noises. If this occurrs, with clutch depressed move gear lever forwards into gear position then directly back into reverse rather than trying to engage reverse directly. Works most times.

I had this exact same issue before Christmas and it ended up being the Master Cylinder reservoir needed topping up. This was when I found out for the first time that the Griff had a seperate reservoir for the clutch and did not share the brake reservoir.

Being the same size as an egg cup it doesn't hold much fluid. I topped mine up and it has been fine ever since.

I had a similiar issue recently, was ok when I parked in my garage then two weeks later gear selection v.difficult, in my case it turned out to be a dry remote linkage, sprayed with WD40 and voila! back to normal...I sprayed the linkage from underneath....hope this is of some help
