Best in what respect? personally, I like the Citroen DS, the Fezza 355, and the Toyota GT2000. I;m sure each are woeful in many respects.

Bit of a misnomer really. For what? Best sports car? Best luxury car? Best compact car? Best all-rounder (which will never be the best in any particular class as a result of inherent compromise). It's impossible to answer!

Does everything extremely well, nothing badly. Not my favourite, not the best looking or most exciting but as a device for moving people around it's extremely hard to beat

Best could mean a lot, so in my opinion it wuld end up being a large saloon with lots of power.

You can do anything with it, and still have fun. That would bring it to stuff like E39 M5, Audi RS6, Lotus Carlton or maybe e34 Alpina B10 BiTurbo.

You could go on holiday with it, take the kids to school in it, tow a caravan (or speedboat) and still bring it to a trackday.

They could do everything you'd need from a car, apart from cheap motoring. Some of them could even go up in value over the years.

Alpina B12 would do then. Preferably with the 560bhp Dinan turbo conversion. biggrin

On the balance of things (best car ever made is quite broad!), one of these:

2.8 litre petrol six has the perfect blend of power and economy. Refined on the motorway but also pleasing for the enthusiastic driver in the twisties. Practical estate and looks great >10 years down the line.

Some might say the equivalent 530d is a more sensible ownership proposition.

Autocar believed the saloon version to be the best car in the real world ever made at the time.
