D16 mini project
Discussion
Hi, this is my first post and i thought id show you my mini project ive had for a few years. Initially me and my dad were just going to tidy it up a bit and make it road legal but as we dug deeper in to the car we found more and more rust so it was stripped down to the shell and i now have plans to turn it into a track car.
Here is the car when i first bought it

As i was planning to use the original 998 engine to begin with i took it out, stripped all of the ancillaries off and tidied it all up.

The car then sat around for a while gradually being stripped...

Because there was alot of welding to do we made a spit to put the car in the garage so we could spin it around

Here are some parts i have bought along the way..
Gaz 36 point adjustable shocks

heavy duty adjustable tie-bars

Adjustable lower arms

Hi-Lo ride height kit

Polybushes

Reconditioned metro 4-pot callipers

Vented discs

Minifin alloy brake drums

Goodridge braided hoses

Fibreglass one piece flip front

and a few bits i have got powdercoated
Subframe

Rocker cover

The engine i am using is a 1.6 Single cam from a rover 216 gti but obviously it is a honda engine.

Most of the welding has now been done and we will start on the engine conversion soon, i will post more pics when i progress with the build

Looks like a good project but I have 2 questions...
1. Are you sure that engine can be made to fit in the car?
2. If you're going to all the trouble of doing an engine conversion why put a fairly average SOHC 1600 in there? Surely there are better, lighter and more powerful options - K series, Duratec, later Honda engine etc.

Hi thanks for the comments
Yes I am sure that the engine can be made to fit as I have seen a few completed conversions myself. The inner wings have to be removed and then either a bulkhead box or a modified inlet manifold fitted but it will go in there with a bit of work.
The reason I am using this engine is because I got the donor car very cheap and it is a good reliable engine. The reason I have not chosen other engines such as vauxhall Redtop, Honda b16/b18 etc are the cost of the engines and donor cars and that they are known to be harder to fit under an unlengthened front end. The d16 I am using is the non vtec version with about 110 ish bhp which I think should be enough to begin with in a car that weighs around 600kgs. If I decide I want more power when it is finished then I have the option of swapping it for a vtec lump or maybe even a turbo
haha

D16's take to turbocharging very well im told

Cool project!
Yeh I've seen a few dohc d16s in the 216 and 416 but the reason I have chosen a sohc is because of space under the bonnet and because I already had a known good engine and car that I bought off my dad. If I had to go hunting for a donor car I would of considered a dohc but I couldn't turn down the 216 gti really
