I'm laying the underlay at the moment and reading conflicting info. regarding placement of gripper rod. some say it should be laid on each side of the tread (in addition to back of tread & base of riser) whilst others say not. additionally, some say to put underlay on the riser, others just the tread and under the nosing.

my staircases are a mix of closed & open string and I'm using cut carpet, not a runner. what's best in terms of gripper/underlay location?

apologies for duff pics as the flash on my phone is dead and I've just isolated the lighting ring to change a fitting. hope you can see enough from these.

Gripper looks a bit to close where the tread meets riser.underlay needs to butt up to the gripper on the tread and go over and butt up to the gripper on the riser.

Second photo , the gripper and undelay need to be cut an inch short of the open side and fold the carpet over to butt up to the underlay when you fit. if fitted tightly you wont need to pin the carpet

I got my landing and stairs done for £150, including carpet, gripper and thick luxury underlay.

It's one of those jobs just not worth doing yourself. It's a damn skilled job fitting a carpet perfectly.

DaveS13 you sound like you got a really cheap deal there as my fitters would charge £70 just for the fitting, and yes the grippers are a bit tight together as when bolstering in the carpet will be a bit hard

Same here, although it cost more. Stair similar to that in photos. The exposed edge of carpet was bound prior to fitting.

I'm not laying the carpet myself (there's 105sqm to do!), just the underlay & gripper. I just don't want the fitters to turn up and tell me I've done it wrong.

there's 10mm spacing between the gripper and riser/tread, is this enough? works out about 4mm between the grippers.

I take it then there's no need for gripper on the edges of the treads?

I have never seen gripper on the edges. If it is needed the fitters could tell you on the day of fitting and it would only take 10 mins to put it in.
