When Are We Going To Be Able To Embed You Tube Videos?

It is not a challenge technically, but is a decision which needs some thought from a content point of view; what will be the effect on people browsing at work, will people post NSFW videos using it, do we allow just YouTube or any site with embed codes, will it open us up to people embedding nasties into threads.

I think it is something that is worth looking at again though, so I'll raise it with the relevant people and see what they think.

Presumably you'll do the same as when people post rude pictures or pictures with uncensorred swear words in them. ie too little, too late

I have found that web pages with a reasonable number of youtube videos embedded take ages to load, and sometimes even affect my ability to scroll whilst waiting for them to load.

Not the sort of "benefit" we need at PH, IMO

Surely looking to improve is a good thing and I'm not sure what prompted such a reply to be honest. Are you saying you'd rather he didn't look at the issue? If so, why? We probably won't do it in all honesty but it's good to hear opinion.

Any problem posts should always be reported to mods for attention.

From a purely personal perspective I would be against it, I like the clean simple look of PH

I also really don't need anything to make PH look less like work than it already does

Is a (non-playing) video any worse for this than an image though, or for that matter an animated gif?

I also prefer the clean, uncluttered look of PH. Certainly makes for easier work browsing.

What about a preferences option? So that if you opt out of having it embedded, it just shows as a link.

This is the only thing that would really bother me as I view PH in the evening on my mobile and due to poor reception (which results in a considerable wait just to open a normal thread) It may stop me from viewing many threads if there are numerous You tube posts.

It wouldn't download the video unless you clicked to play it, so I'd expect the extra data to be roughly the same as an embedded image. But as I said, it would need testing.

Dunno about a non-playing video tbh (images can take a fair bit of time), but gifs take forever to load.

From my perspective I usually skim past "comedy" photos and the same old memes that get repeated ad infinitum and rarely click on youtube links, so embedding videos would add nothing to PH IMO while risking slowing the whole thing down.

As a positive, though, having the image of the video would tell you whether you've seen it before, so you can choose to click and play it or not. When people post youtube LINKS they generally tend not to be accompanied by a description. So you either have to watch it to realise you've seen it or are not interested, or you have to skip it all together.

I think that a non playing static image which loads as fast as a regular image would be useful for determining what to watch and what not to watch.

Slightly confused by this as the only Youtube vids I tend to see are in the main thread in the lounge and ones in there MUST HAVE TITLES!!

The data has to be processed by the trash player plugin though, so there's a significant hit from that.

Just tried loading a thread with about 15 youtube videos embedded on it and it froze firefox for several seconds while the trash player sorted itself out.
