i have about £20,000 to spend on a family car which my partner and i can share,
the range rover was out of my price range for a while but now its within budget for a diesel with miles below 90k.

the bmw x3 is far more cheaper to buy (£10k) but its more to insure.

with both cars having full service history from main dealers, tax and mots
what ones the best to go for?

Do you need serious off-road ability - if so, then the RR is the only one that has it.

If your only off-roading is Sainsbury's car park, then any of them - or a decent "proper" car.

Pssst, proper Range Rovers are cheaper second hand than the Sport versions.

Everyone I know with a Range Rover spends more time in the garage than driving it.

Everyone I know with an X3 needs to spend more time in Specsavers.

However, I'd take a RRS everytime over anything else of that style.

Mate had a diesel RRS for a few years, had no real problems with it, just minor stuff like having headlamp bulbs changed. Nice enough car to be in IMO but comparing it with the X3(yuck) is strange, the X5 is more the equivalent. Hardly drivers cars though and think what you could get with £20k!

Looks aside I imagine this goes pretty well.

That`s the same engine that`s in a 535d isn`t it?

I must admit that was my reaction too.

OP: Do you own a car repair garage? If not, have you got a hefty contingency for repairs?

Have had two Sports and a Vogue.

Apart from a handbrake service being done under warranty on a Sport, I've had no issues whatsoever.

I'm guessing they weren't £20K cars with 90K miles on them, though?
