Now I'm the first to admit being technically inept, but what a nightmare trying to sort this. Lad's old Xbox died, so he bought a new one. I got him a data transfer cable to swap his profile with has got hundreds of gamer points (whatever they are)from the old HDD to the new one.

New Xbox plugged in and updates dowloaded (all good so far). Then I tried to sign up. Went through the first few steps, then put in my e-mail address. A BT one isn't acceptable apparently, so hotmail account created. It then finally accepts that and gives a 'tag'.

I then downloaded the old hardrive, but it won't let him use his old profile. It asked me for all my personal and credit card details, (which I wasn't pleased about) and right at the end kicked me out.

He's now playing on the original account that I eventually set up, but that shows him as an adult with a big fat zero gamer points. He's also got to some silly level on Black Ops and he's moaning that the live account means he has to start from scratch again. His old profile is there, but I can't get it onto 'Live'.

How do I swap the old profile for the new one??? If I sign up the old profile as a new account, will it still give access to Live Gold account, or is it exclusively for the original profile (if that makes sense)

Why did you have to down load the hard drive you should have been able to unclip the old hard drive and then clip it in place on the new console. All the data would have been transferred when you did this.

The old HDD was from a first gen X Box (red rings of death). It doesn't fit the new 250gb one.

you dont have to sign up to xbox live again, only need to sign in with the account from the old xbox and it will transfer his old profile with points etc over to his new xbox as the points etc are all online, what you did was transfer save games etc from old to new.

Sorry.

Haven't made myself clear. He didn't have live on the old Xbox. His old profile had all his gamerpoints that he accrued just playing single player. He wants to use this profile on live, but we can't seem to swap it with the new profile that was created when we signed up.

I think you may have problems. Forza 2 definitely didnt let you upgrade your offline game/points to an online version.
