Gov plans:

You may now be fined for not insuring a vehicle you don't use, according to the news just now.
The fine of £100 will escalate if you don't pay it.

How's this work for those who have a track day car, or a resto project, etc?

Fair?

Bastidos!

So essentially, while taxed, a car must also be insured. While SORN'd, you don't have to insure it.

What's the problem? confused

If it's not SORNed then yes, as far as I understand.

Dumb question. Does this include motor cycles?

Well you always had to have insurance to buy a tax disc, so it's not much of a step to have to have insurance for its entire duration.

People like to create awkward situations where this means they would get fined, then claim they do it all the time. It happened in the last nine threads about this.

So Taxed must also be insured, but if under SORN no need to insure, BUT what about if you have a old car which is not taxed and not under SORN which is posible if it has not been on the road and Taxed since the need to SORN became the law?

But what if you bought a car that had 4 months tax left on it, leaving a gap after the insurance runs out when the car is stll taxed

First paragraph of the link above said:
If you're the registered keeper of a vehicle, it must be insured at all times.
The only exceptions are:
if you have made a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) for the vehicle
vehicles that have been kept off-road since before SORN came into force on 31 January 1998 - unless they are brought back into use

Then you're obliged to either insure it from the day you buy it or cash the tax in. Which sounds like the normal thing to do to me?

I think you get something like a free tax disc, rather than you can just ignore anything to do with tax.

He's not talking about tax exempt cars, but about cars that were already off the road and untaxed when SORN came into being and thus are neither SORNed or taxed.

Will help to stop uninsured driver since they will not need to be "caught in the act" while driving.

Sounds good to me.
