Its not surprising, that's what a lot of the UK is like. Just seems odd that we are so nancy about racism, yet it still exists in huge numbers in England without too much concern from anyone...

Seems the black couple are doing quite well after that meeting. If the villagers see beyond the skin, then I think they are the better family for the place.

Some of the backwardness is funny to the point where its almost astonishing. You forget when you visit these quaint little places for a weekend, that people actually live there day in day out.

It's astonishingly common though. That attitude can be found nearly everywhere outside of a big town.

Havn't watched the program as I hate this kind of st tv.

But have you ever wondered that Country folk don't like changes to their lives? Don't want cameras shoved in their face etc?

My parents moved to the country back in 71, they are white, nice couple 2 kids etc.
They were not truly accepted as members of the village for many years, it took a lot of effort and bridge building and helping out at village events etc to prove that they were not just townies. You don't just move into a village, the village has to accept you. When my parents left 4 years ago they left a lot of very good friends who they stay in touch with.

Some people in the shires can seem racist and backward. But I would rather live in the country than in a town any day. It makes me laugh how townies try to look down on the country and apply their values to it. You can't explain why the country is better and to be honest the people in the countryside don't want others to find out why, cause they will move in and ruin it.

Thats coming from a yokel boy who longs to return to the fields..oh and I'm not racist...some of my best friends etc etc smile

The villagers' attitude towards to the black family doesn't surprise me. If a white family moved into an Indian village I'm sure they'd be a source of local suspicion and fascination for months. It's not something that's particular to Britain or white people. It's human nature.

Bang on what the old girl at the end said 'they are a nice couple but the wife let them down'.

The right couple won the vote.

Nice to see in the end that the village saw through the skin colour. If you imagine that the black family had white skin, they would fit in perfectly with their good family morals, good ambition and good values etc.

I've got family out in the sticks and when you look at them its like looking back in time. They are happy, but in a sort of simple way.

Your right, it can be boring, luckily my folks lived next door to one of the village pubs (a good one too)

I have to admit that I pretty much left when I joined the forces. But still loved going back on leave, walking the dog in the woods out back, drinking in the pub listening to tractor talk and real Jethro kind of stuff.

I'd like to go rural again but I would need to be within 30 minutes of a good work location.

No they wouldn't, as I said in my post, they would still be outsiders and treated as such for as long as it took them to fit in.
Skin colour means less than you think.

Couldn't agree more! The white woman was very negative and, seemed to be of the 'give it to me as I deserve it and shouldn't have to get off my arse to get it' clan.

Typical city dwellers always thinking they're better people....

We all sit in the countryside pitying you city folk with your retchied council estate, smoggy, bus jammed, crime ridden, pokey flat city centre hell holes while we enjoy our freindly comunities were we can sit in our gardens and enjoy the peace and clean air.
