Whats the latest with electric / hydrogen cars?

Don't get me wrong I love my petrol (and diesel!) cars, and have never really taken much interest in electric cars. This was probably due to thinking it will never happen, or believing they will be terrible, or not wanting to support the whole save the planet thing.
But after slowly hearing more mentioned about them on the tv recently, is it slowly growing in likelhood, i.e. that soon we will all have electric cars?
There are even loads of car charging points springing up (never seen a car attached to one, or even an electric car).
It made me think, if the technology is there to make it viable, it should take off. Look at fuel prices! You'd never have to pay anything like it again! Literally if had an electric car tomorrow, i can charge it for free all over the place! It would save me thousands!
One last thing though, i thought, just imagine everyone got an elctric car tomorrow. What would that do to electricity prices?!?! They would go through the roof! So soon it would inevitably even itself out. And what would happen to all the people without a car?!? It would cost them £50 to watch the TV!!!
Lastly, not really heard owt on Hydrogen cars for years - has much developed in that field???
