Differences in real-life consumption: 535d pre-LCI and LCI
Discussion
I was wondering if anyone had real-life experiences with a 535d in pre-LCI and LCI shape?
I understand that the new gearbox contributes more to the better fuel-consumption than the upgraded engine? Are claims of 25 % better consumption true?
Also, from a driving point of view, is the LCI model noticeable better or are we talking minute differences?
Finally, any reliability issues with one over the other?

26.9mpg on a pre facelift over 10 months and 26k miles for me.
33.8mpg doing shorter journeys on the LCI, I am sure that would have been nearer 37mpg if I had been doing the longer runs I did in my 2005 535d.
Massive difference for me as I do 40k miles a year, so around £210 a month saved in fuel, for someone doing 15k miles year it is more like £80-90 saving.

I did it the other way round - i'd a LCI 535d and then a non LCI car.
Its approx 5 mpg difference.
Personally, if you have any (financial) choice, definitely go for an LCI car.
Much better gearbox.
Better rear suspension
Slightly more power
Much improved economy.
Better quality for some trim items
Revised door trim
The gearbox alone is the big one for me. Much much smoother and faster to respond and - this was a neat feature - when you switch the car off it automatically goes to 'P'. Very handy.
