Bin the AirBag ?

In years past, one of the first things I'd do is a replace my cars steering wheel. A nice small momo sterring wheel is a joy to (be)hold.
Modern cars have these rather inconvenient air bag things in the middle. I'd love to bin the tired wheel on my car, but that'll mean binning the air bag. I think I can live with the risk - I do more miles on a motorbike than in the car.
Anybody done this? did the insurnace company kick up a fuss?
