Hi everyone. Have probably popped up on here a lot lately. This is because i am 17 years old and have my driving test coming up soon. My aim is to get a car that is as cheap to insure as possible which is why i am coming for help. Thanks.

Land Rover Defender or Series. Peanuts to insure, can be fixed with 3 different spanners, a hammer and elastic bands. Parts are buttons - you can get a service filter kit for £11! The only thing they are not cheap for is fuel, for which they are a little worse than others of their ilk.

Id gess classic mini, MGB, Spitfire or Midget. When I was 22 I insured a 1987 Porsche 911 for £700 which I didn't think was too bad.

Vw beetle, morris minor then join the club of the car .

You may get cheaper car insurance then as well, get policy with a limit on the miles you drive as well.

As was mentioned in your other thread, you could struggle to find classic car insurance. Some companies will only offer it to over 25's, a lot of them won't insure you unless you have another car first either. And then the cover won't extend to commuting. This is all because insurers are getting wise to the fact that young lads are buying old cars and getting them on a classic policy as a little cheat to get cheap car insurance.

I would expect an easy ride if you are looking at going down this route, it's done actual classic car users no favours as they're probably paying more for their policies while 17 year olds crash all the old sheds they've been driving.

Our Fiat 500 is free to tax, insurance is £100 or so and it does 50 mpg, whats not to like ?

The car itself !

Seriously if anyone wants one to save a few quid on insurance, then they are mental, feel less vulnerable on my push bike.

Morris Minor, charming little things and quite easy to dump in a more potent engine and better gearbox at a later date.

Quite strangely I bought a 1.1 Fiesta after passing my test as it had a listed top speed of 87MPH and the Minor only 74 or so. The (silly) choice was made after my father got wind of the 3.5 Rover V8 I'd secured and didn't want a Minor ruined.

He never did clarify if he meant the ruination of a good classic but shoving in a V8 or me ruining the car (and myself) but sticking it through a hedge...backwards and possibly on fire.

+1 for the Landy but I believe early teens fuel use is about right for even a 2.25 petrol
