So I decide to ring around a couple of "specialist" insurers today to see if I can improve my insurance premium on the 200sx as I'm planning to get a sensible daily and promote the Nissan to weekend only duties. I speak to Sky (rec'd on sxoc) and Footman James looking for limited mileage policies. Sky told me that due to me living in London and the car being parked in a residents car park for my block, and not on a private drive, they cannot insure me at all! FJ said that due to me being only 29 they cannot insure me on the car at all! Of course I am currently insured on it with normal mileage, parking on the street in a high risk postcode (will be moving to the new block in nicer area imminently).

So what is the point of a specialist if they can't insure these high risk cars for someone in my situation with no points/convictions/claims in my entire 12 year driving history?!?!

Not expecting an answer, more of a late night rant and wondering if I'm the only one...I suspect not.

I know how you feel, sky insurance were a bit st with me and informed me that apparently my postcode is a high-risk postcode and my town was also high risk.

Valid points, except I live an hour from the town they thought i lived in(They thought preston, I live southport) and I live down the road from royal birkdale golf club and the area where some clebs live like alan hanson....

Technically nothing is uninsurable, other than risks that are not in the public interest. However, more and more insurers are withdrawing from markets (note markets not individuals specific circumsances) that lose money, so your market to shop round is shrinking fast.

I've been shopping around for quotes on an MX5 or Eunos MkI this last couple of days - tried absolutely everywhere - the comparison engines all came back with quotes circa £300 for an MX5 and up to £400 for a Eunos. Even trying the recommended insurers via club websites didn't help - they were often more expensive than the mainstream searches.

Anyway, after seeing an advert, I tried Aviva, and got a quote of £210. Big, big saving.

They're doing 12 for the price of 9 months at the moment, which is a big saving - as well as being very competitive on price anyway.

My MX5 will be parked on my drive, not garaged, and I've insured it for business use, too - so I'd say they're definitely worth a try.

Isn't not insuring someone because of where they live a type of descrimination? The problem is doing anything about won't get you a cheaper policy, but will probably end up with us all paying more.

On a slightly more helpful note: contact your local council and ask about a lock up garage. A lot of them have them to rent out and it will only cost a few pounds per week. This should satisfy the insurance company.

Where you may be adrift is thinking that a Nissan parked outside a block of flats in London represents "specialist" motoring. A cherished (and preferably garaged) classic or sportscar may be more what they have in mind.

Alan Hansen is quite a well known car keyer in celebrity circles. Keep it hush hush though.

To be honest all these specialist insurers have been completely cack for me.

I spent ages getting quotes when I had the MX5 and recently have looked for quotes on a 330ci which I want to get. Without fail, the best quote has always been from price comparison sites. These supposed specialists don't seem very knowledgable about cars (which is surprising) and have usually quoted circa 3 times my best quote.

Point taken but Sky insurance have a similar kind of deal on SXOC as Flux do on here; they specifically tell you to come to them to insure your SX!

They have the same with the MX5-Nutz forum, but are stupidly expensive for low risk drivers.

Hmmm...I've been contemplating trading in for an MX5. Would defo be cheaper to insure and just as much fun in the bends (if not more) but wouldn't have that awesome ability to pull away from traffic like the SX.

Specialist insurers are generally speaking a load of st.

They charge you the earth because they think they're doing you a favour insuring you at all, and often have crap customer service. Only specialis I'd use would be hyperformance, had a heavily modified car when I was 19 and with all mods declared it was about 20% more expensive than the best comparison site price for a standard car. They said they specialised in young drivers, drivers with claims, modified cars and drivers with convictions. Barring convictions, that was me and they did me a good deal.

Well, I'd definitely try Aviva.

They've just knocked £150 off the cost of Mrs VeeFour's insurance this year, and I've got my MX5 insurance down to just £180 FC, with business use included.

They must be desperate for business at the moment - or they have profiling that suits middle aged people with lots of NCD in medium to low risk postcodes.

Yes, as insurance is by definition discriminatory. Of course you could get all the insurers to remove all discrimination from their pricing and then we could have a flat fee of say £5000 for everyone as every insurer will have to insure everybody on any car they wish at all times for as many miles as they want to drive in any trade.

The problem there is that it would discriminate against the low-mileage, high NCD, middle aged, cherished car drivers who only use it for pleasure a few times a year.

Just tried Aviva online quote and they came in at £1600!!! That's more than double the £750 I pay now and I entered a lower mileage without commuting. Insane!

Is there an owner's club? If so, they might have links with insurers who could help?

Add commuting back on and see what happens. My Elise insurance (Admiral) went down when I put commuting on it, and upped the mileage to 10,000 a year.
