I'm not the biggest Elbow fan, but do like the last album and just got around to listening to this as need something nice for my hangover!

I'm enjoying it, the opening track is great.

I'll not go into it much as dont want to spoil, but expected a thread on here sooner or later talking about it as I know there's many fans about; so here it is..

Anyone?

On first listen, it seems very introverted, but definitely a grower, much as all their albums. Garvey's lyrics are as awesome as ever.

Still think Asleep In The Back is their finest hour overall, with flashes of genius in all their other works.

I've listened to it through 3 times since about 2pm today.

I think it's brilliant; delicate melodies, fantastic imagery and real depth, reflection and warmth from Garvey's lyrics. They're all great tracks in my opinion, though I may be biased as I've always been a huge Elbow fan.

Asleep In The Back is still my favourite album too (and has been since Mark and Lard played the stunning new-at-the-time single Powder Blue) but Build A Rocket Boys! has a simple, layered beauty to it as opposed to AITB's more sinister, progressive sound. Having said that, I absolutely love all of their material. This new collection manages to be both very much Elbow and yet, like each of their albums, be very much different to the previous efforts.

It sounds a bit silly, but if you actually listen to the story these songs are telling, they each create a different atmosphere and really draw you in. Well... they do me, anyway biggrin

In fact I'm now listening to it again, and with every hearing I'm enjoying it more. If you're new to Elbow and this is your first album of theirs, it will really get under your skin after a few plays. Don't judge them by the somewhat chart-friendly One Day Like This (cracking though that song is) - there's so much more to them than that.

Need to get hold of this, have been a big Elbow fan since Asleep in the Back. Wasn't sure about Neat Little Rows the first time I heard it but it's grown on me a lot the more I hear it. Sounds like the new album might be a slow burner as well, although the best albums usually are.

It isn't out until tomorrow - or is this a leaked version you are all listening to? I'm afraid I'm a bit old fashioned and prefer to wait and purchase a copy to reward the artist, which I will be doing tomorrow! biggrin

No leaks, I preordered it HMV and got the CD yesterday smile

I've just started it playing again; with every listen it just gets better and better. The Birds is a hell of an opening track - the way it builds over 8 minutes is just genius.

I am a big fan, and still have not listened to it, keep running out of time frown

The snippets I listened to last week were promising it to be a very good album
Think my favourite album would have to be Seldom seen kid as an album, but the best songs were from the first two (powder blue, black and whites, red, and fallen angel)

Going to see them later on in the month biggrin

I like it. It's more optimistic than some of their older stuff, and while the individual songs aren't as apparent as they are on the previous album, there's some good stuff there.

Gutted I had to get rid of the tickets to the Glasgow concert, but skiing takes precedence!

Tour should be fantastic, went to their warm up gig in Cambridge the other week. Absolutely brilliant live as usual.

Seeing them twice at the end of the month too, MEN arena on the Friday and then taking the kids to the O2 in London (sitting down for them).

Bit of an elbow fan as you can see. New album is a grower, its not until you really listen to the lyrics that you realise what a talent Guy Garvey is.

Saw them last year, and they must have been the tightest band I've ever seen live. The end of Newborn was absolutely stunning. They nailed it to perfection; you could see by the way they looked at each other after the climax that they knew it just didn't get better than that. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end at the time, and still does now just thinking about it.

And Garvey must be up there with the absolute best, lyric-wise.

I relatively new to Elbow and don't have either of the first two albums. I've listened to the new one four or five times and I'm starting to get into it now, I know Seldom Seen Kid and Leaders of the Free World took me a while to warm to as well.

Seldom Seen Kid is my favourite so far and one of my favourite albums altogether. I've watched the live DVD of it at Abbey Road at least a dozen times now, the epic orchestrations topped off by Garvey's voice and lyrics makes it such a beautiful experience to observe.

You might be interested in this then -

elbow live

Someone made a pretty good recording of the show and have apparently been given permission by 'the management' to publish it online.

Enjoy!
