of all the motor powered things in the world i'd love a spitfire but gather there are only a few 2 seater ones in the uk

i assume a passenger flight isn't cheap but has anyone done it as it's one of the things i'd like to do in my life

I often see the 2-seat Carolyn Grace Spitfire (going to/from Bentwaters in Suffolk and Duxford, presumably).

Why was a 2-seater built, if passenger flights aren't possible? (shrug) There's a comment on this site - http://gary-stedman.fotopic.net/p26772328.html - that it might be possible (if you have deep pockets).

Some Spitfires were converted into two-seat trainers as after WWII ex-RAF aircraft were sold to other nations. I think the Grace Spitfire was an Irish Airforce trainer.

The Grace spitfire does do "pleasure trips"

I looked into it for my 40th in 2010, and my wife was in touch with them asking about a fly past for a resident celebrating his 100th in the care home she manages in cambridge.

They were willing to help but unable to due to not being allowed to fly a single engined aircraft over a city the size of cambridge, well so mrs grace said.

Take a look on there website for details, sorry, dont have link.

Eeek! Don't call a Spitfire a "plane". It's an aeroplane. It used to be the case that aircraft operated on a Permit to Fly, as warbirds are, could not fly over towns, but now they can, but they would not be allowed to fly low enough for a meaningful flypast, so better to go to Duxford, where Spitfires are regularly airborne.

There's a local buisnessman a few miles from where I live in North Wales who owns and flies his own Spitfire MK9. On most Sundays during the summer if your early enough you can sit on the prom and watch him do his stuff. There really is nothing like the drone of that Merlin at 9am on a summers morn.

According to the Haynes spit manual I have, they are a lot more than that.

The cost per hour to run them is massive too - big boys money (insurance, parts, fuel etc)

Absolutely brilliant things. There is one here at Lyneham and it comes out to play on fine summer evenings and there is nothing better than sitting with a good beer just watching, and listening, to it do its stuff.
I hope it doesn't go with the Alberts.

As to the question - as long as you have the cash, nothing is impossible wink

I looked into this last year for my dads birthday. There is a group based in Kent who are restoring a mk9 and converting it to two seater. Unfortunately, when finished, it will not be able to take paying passengers but you can buy a share for about £600 and become joint owner. This will entitle you to a flight in it once it is finished. However, they cannot say when this will be. Details can be found at www.spitflight.com

A few years ago I spoke to Carolyn Grace in order to get my dad a flight in her two seater.

They have to do them as pleasure flights due to the restrictions on these sort of planes, and payment is some sort of charity donation.

The waiting list was over 5 years. I sent a stamped addressed envelope to get the forms and never got a reply.

Having just watched "Spitfire Sisters" on the TV, the story of the ATA delivery girls in the war, they sound remarkably easy to fly!

I'm sure they are not, but to fly in in one day, is on my list
