PS3 video and audio problems

When watching downloaded movies or listening to music on my PS3 slim, the audio and video have started playing up intermittently! The screen goes black for a second or two, and the audio goes off for a couple of seconds too (the two things don't happen at the same time). This happens every minute or so and gets worse and more frequent the longer i watch or listen to something. As you can imagine, it's extremely annoying when watching a film!

At first i thought it might be because i was watching them via a usb FAT32 hard drive, so i started copying them directly onto the PS3 before watching but now it is happening to those as well. I have swapped the HDMI cable but that hasn't resolve the issue.

It happens regardless of the file type, whether it's AVI, MP4, AVCHD, MP3.

Has anyone else had this problem or know what i can do to fix it?

I get this with my video output - I'll periodically get the screen flash black for a second. I always assumed it was because I'm running through a VGA converter box to my monitor. Are there any oddities in your setup?

No, I have a separates surround sound system that it goes through but i disconnected the amp and the problem still exists. I swapped the HDMI cable to no avail also.

Like i say it just seems to be getting worse and i can't figure out what is causing it!
