I'm looking to buy a new car. It has to be less than £2k (£1.5k would be nicer). I've narrowed it down to two choices, Mk1 MX-5 or a Jeep Cherokee XJ (on lpg).

What are peoples opinions?
Pros and cons of each?
Things to look out for when viewing them?

Ta for any help.

A Cherokee or an MX-5??

How are they comparable in ANY way? Do you need to carry stuff/people?

So that you can simply roll around, avoiding the need for any mechanical transportation?

Haha - classic 'what car' thread.

Jeep or a MX-5? - I'd go for the Porsche.

They both have four wheels and and engine in the front and...erm

Well, I like them both.

No kids but don't NEED more than two seats or a big boot. But the Jeep would be nice for Ikea trips etc.

Well, I'll presume that you don't do daily trips to Ikea...?

So, buy the MX-5, save stloads of money on running costs and ask a mate to help lug your Ikea stuff or pay them to deliver. Easy. smile

In this case, buy a Cherokee just because it will confuse everyone!

One concern is that my girlfriend couldn't get to work for about a week in December, and it took her ages when she could, due to the snow. The Jeep would be a big help here.

Will it though? What mpg does an MX-5 get? Considering the Jeep will be on LPG that will lower fuel costs a bit.

This is why its a tough choice, I'm a bit of both.

And next year my girlfriend and I will probably be buying a house with a drive so I can have both.

This is a good point. I'd have to get a big "Go Vegan!" sticker for it.

Fit Winter tyres and providing the snow's not more than 12" an MX5 copes perfectly well (significantly better than 4x4s without them) we found this Winter.

I'm not putting a towbar on an MX5!

I've seen this Jeep that I like the look of. http://www.rhmotorscarsales.co.uk/used-cars/jeep-c...
Might swing by on the way to Ikea (I've mentioned it twice in this thread, very sad!) next weekend.
Only problem is, they never made on with a 3.7 V6 so does this garage know what they're on about?

I'd love to know how this thread has simplified the buffoonery of 'what car' threads hehe
