Mileage & Engines
Discussion
A mate of mine is looking for a new car. (£4k budget & Low insurance group)
Found a couple of cars but he is put off by high (90k+) mileage on Petrols. We have been looking at Astra / Vectras or similar of 2005-06 vintage.
He is looking to keep the car for 3-5 years. doing ~15k per year.
Do Petrols still have an air of unreliability above 100k?

Come on dude, over 4,000 posts and been a member for 100 months... you know better than this.
Of course it'll be fine, it depends on how it's been looked after, what condition it is in now.
Unless it's a Rover or MG with the dreaded K Series engine, in which case HGF is a heartbeat away.
Oh, and don't get an Alfa, the belts will go if you sneeze at it.

Depends on servicing and previous use, more than anything. Flat out city driving by clueless school-run mum and serviced when it stops is obviously going to lead to a knackered engine by 90k. Motorway miles by a fleet driver with regular servicing will obviously mean the engine will be fine at 90k.

Yup. And chances are that a 5 year old Vectra with 90k on it will have never seen anything but motorway.Papa Hotel said:

That is seriously unfair!!!Rover K with a fresh multi layer gasket and steel locating dowels will go on forever with no more 'HGF' b

And besides engines are easily looked after for 1,2,3 hundred k it's the rest of the car you need to worry about, brakes (fluid especially overlooked), suspension and drivetrain don't last forever either.

It should be fine so long as it's well maintained. I'd look harder though, lower mileage examples can be found and that'll pay dividends for other things like wear and tear on the interior and suspension bushes.
Motorway miles do not wear out seats and bushes; bums getting in and out and pothole-ridden city streets do the wearing.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
