Hi All

i am currently an owner of an extremely dull Civic, after coming from two convertibles, due to requiring the need to save money.
I'm looking at getting another convertible in May after my wedding and require the help of PH!

My criteria:

MAX 2K Budget after selling Civic.
Needs semi decent fuel economy - 35-45 (unlikely)mpg as I will be using it for commuting 26 miles a day on a pretty low salary
Needs a soft top preferably!
can be either 2 seat or four seat, no specific requirement.
Fairly cheap to insure i.e around £50 max a month
Don't care about performance - economy is the key.
Will be kept outside, so needs to be weatherproof

I have considered things like a 1.6 115PS MGTF through to a Caterham or similar kit car.
The MG has good economy, but lacks in the insurance and reliability area
Caterham as fun as it would be - is it possible to have one as daily driver like Cock Womble? Are they economical? Insurance wise at circa 11000 miles a year?

Any help much appreciated!

The Vauxhall Astra bertone convertible can be had for around £2k and should be reliable. Early MR2 roadsters are also around that price point but the pre-cats can fail on pre facelift cars and destroy the engine (even though these can be easily removed, it always put me off the car).

What about something with a T-Bar roof? Eg, older MR2 mk1/mk2, 300zx etc?

Interesting alternative may be a Honda CRX Del-Sol.

Or... another MX-5 (though the mpg is a bit crap according to the figures).

I was contemplating an Astra Convertible - the bertone's don't look too bad either!
MR2 I would have thought has high insurance though?

T tops are a possibility, I don't think a 300zx would be on the cards though - they're 3 litre V6s aren't they? wink

Civic del sol is another good thought

Not keen on MX5 again yet - My 1.8 was barely returning 30mpg I think! Will wait til I get a payrise before a mk1 comes onto the scene wink
