As it was a nice day i thought i sort out nearside front brakes which were binding and dragging (only slightly though) took apart caliper and cleaned it all out and fine emery on the pins, however its made very little difference, still binding and disc is hot to the touch where the other one it just warm, any ideas where to go from here ?

I had a similar issue on my TVR S2. The brakes were binding and it got worse as it got warmer. I tried all of the usual fixes, caliper refurbs, hose changes, etc with no joy.

Turned out that it was the brake light switch badly adjusted and holding the brakes just slightly on. As they heated up and everything expanded the binding grew progressively worse.

2 minutes tweaking the switch by bending the mounting bracket sorted it forever. Not saying that this is your issue, but it might be?

Have you checked the front brake pipes. I believe that the originals can collapse in the inside and act like a oneway valve. . May even be a seized caliper, this happened to one of my fronts last year.
I replaced both front calipers.

Could be a sticky piston in the caliper maybie worth a re-build. very easy job to do, IIRC when i did my original front calipers the seal kit and new pistons cost less that £60 they did not really need new pistons, just check for any damage or pitting on them if you do go down this route.

Hi, sounds like a classic flexi brake hose internal collapse to me. Had it on my Griff on that very same corner! £30 part IIRC and about an hour and a half to sort, with a couple of cups of tea.

Externally you will see no evidence of the collapse btw.

Cheers,

Si

Deffo not the hoses, its got braided ones on, liking the idea of rebuilding calipers though, have done before on other cars and they do look a bit grotty, does anyone know the seal kit and new pistons you need, its a 400 with standard calipers, so its sierra, anyone know which one as there are loads of seal kits and piston kits etc around ?

One further note, when the car is cold ie brakes not used, its fine and free, its only slightly binding but you can feel it if rolling in traffic or push with your hand slightly

www.brakesint.co.uk part no. BCK6003 is the seal kit (1 kit required per caliper).

As this problem went away i brushed it under the carpet as you do, however its now back again and i have ordered the repair kit as stated above, in the box there are 3 things, a cap for the bleed valve a concertina type dust cover and one black o ring approx 50mm dia.....................

Now befoe i start stripping down and its then to late can i just ask is this all i need for the seal kit, ie 3 things ?

Yes that's all the seal kit consists of,arm yourself with some red rubber grease before you start easily available from good car accessory joints a much better lubricant than brake-fluid alone rolleyes

Yay all ok now, piston was very dirty and covered in sticky black stuff, got piston out by simply pushing brake pedal a few times and out it popped, back in was another story though, wound up having to take caliper complety off then doing it on bench with vice and g-clamp etc , been for a drive this morning all nice and freewheeling, also passed MOT on friday with sticky piston, guy said its not a fail but best to get it done
