Folks,
I'm thinking of purchasing a Fiat Panda 100BHP (Seriously) and a fully restored 83 XR3I to replace my Mustang.
However, if the mpg is half decent on the Escort,I'll keep the Mustang and use the Escort for the daily commute.
Had the Escort years ago but cannot remember the fuel economy.Back in those days the fuel cost wasn't so bleedin important.
Anyone got any ideas on a mpg figure?

Cheers

Wouldn't have thought it would be too bad. Being 1983, there wasn't too much additional tat that comes as standard with cars these days, so weight is down. This, obviously, helps economy.

Can't remember the engine on the 3i, but my XR2 (1988) is a 1.6 on carbs and gives me about 35MPG average. 28 if driving it properly, or 40 on a gentle motorway run.

You must have fond memories of the XR3i, I had one and certainly wouldn't want another, the CVH is as refined as a tractor and it had the build quality of a packet of crisps.

Nostalgia aint all it it cracked up to be smile

Piffle! The CVH is lovely! hehe Sure, refinement has come along in the nearly 30 years that car has been on the planet, but that is to be expected.

They are brilliantly retro smile

Wouldn't a 1983 be an XR3 not an XR3i? I didn't think they got the fuel injection till about 'C' reg (1986ish). I'm fairly sure the power output was about 12 bhp down on the carb CVH engine but I could be wrong.

Had one of the later CVH engines in my 1991 Escort Cabriolet and loved it. It was the 108bhp EFI engine and with a change of cam revved cleanly to the red line (the standard one died off above 5500rpm).

Mine did about high 20's to the gallon although it went everywhere screaming its tits off and being a cabrio was quite heavy so had a lot more weight to lug about.

Buy one - you'll love it! Mk3 Escort XR3's are getting to be like rocking horse st and can only appreciate (surely?).

ETA - looking into (above was from memory) the XR3i was 1983 onwards (not 1986 duuuh) and produced 105bhp.

Keep them coming boys.
Think I should get about 30 to the gallon and guess what; the burd will let me buy it!

Would be my fantasy garage;

V8 for the long hauls and the retro truly fab escort for the commute.

Had many flash cars over the years but always think back to that Y plate sun burst red escort.

The RS1600I was clearly the better car but it would need to be a minter and 4K is my budget.

Love Fords!

The other thing to bare in mind is that the Panda will continue to depreciate whereas the XR3 will gain value but will likely need more tlc

I must have had one of the very first XR3i's. It was first registered in October 82. smile

I'd love a drive in one now. Happy days!

My brother had two Y reg XR3i's - I had one A reg.

The ones we had were brilliant. Hardly ever see them for sale nowadays - just some scabby cabriolets. Can't remember the mpg either ...

I used to love MK3 XR3I's, they were the car to have when I was a teen. Fast handled great and the interior was fresh compared to equivellant cars of the era.

Only managed to own a few and TBH they aged badly and were all thrashed to within an inch of their lives.

Series 1 RST for me or a 1600I as a close second but as a daily driver hmmmmm I not so sure.

Oh mpg 28-35 on how it's driven.

Apart from rarity value and cosmetics the RS1600i doesn´t offer much over the XR3i. I had an ´83 3i and knew a couple of people with 1600is and there wasn´t any difference on the road.

Had it when I was 18 in 1988 and paid 750 quid to insure it. Wonder what that equates to now.

From memory it was around 25-30 mpg.

I had an A reg one 20ish years ago, At 39.5 pence per litre, I wasn't too worried about how much it drank

I had a lovely Titan Blue XR3 5 speed, complete with a hot cam, Janspeed exhaust and a nice 34/36 twin carb with manual choke. It was quick for what it was.

Then there was a MFi, then an EFi. Your looking at 28-33mpg and possibly 38-40mpg on a gentle steady run.
