Can't find anything with these exact symptoms online, so here goes...

When the car's running cold, there's a very quiet knocking noise which disappears when I push in the clutch. Doesn't seem to be affecting performance and to be honest, it's been there for ages. Only happened to notice last night that it disappears upon pushing in the clutch confused

The clutch doesn't have a huge amount of life left in it but isn't slipping or anything, so does anybody have any ideas what this is and whether or not it's important please? hehe

Cheers smile

Sounds like it is possibly end float.
If so, it will get worse over time, but you've possibly got years of life in it yet (but YMMV).

I get a rough'ish grinding/rumbling noise in my mini coming from what I suspect to be the clutch when it's cold.

My dad says its probably the release bearing.

Mine usually goes away when the car warms up, although the other day it didn't, hoping that's just because its an old car/engine etc, biggrin

Better to include what car it is and which particular engine and transmission.

If it's a diesel, this ^ ^. Mine does it sometimes in very cold weather. I'm 'letting it develop'......

I'm pretty sure Escort Popular 1.3s, and Astra Mk2s don't have dual mass flywheels...

@OP. It could be a number of things. Due to there being many things that could be causing this noise, it is therefore very hard to diagnose a problem like this over the internet. If it bothers you that much, take it to a transmission specialist (If you are in the West Midlands, I will take a look for you.). Failing that, ignore it until the clutch needs replacing.

Car is a 1991 Vauxhall Astra 1.4, with the standard 4 speed gearbox smile

If it goes away when clutch is pressed i.e taking drive away from the gearbox then surely it is gearbox bearing related and not clutch? prob just the layshaft bearings getting tired - I really wouldn't worry about it on a car that old - just keep an eye on it and go easy on the gearbox - perhaps changing the gearbox oil would quieten it down but from what you describe it doesn't sound that bad

Don't worry about it, maybe change the transmission oil and see if that helps.
I'm not sure of Vauxhall's spec but if it's mineral, trying a good semi synthetic might help.
Others have suggested possible reasons but it's not really worth investigating if it drives and selects gears ok.

Also 1991 Astra, those are built to do handbrake turns in a Tescos carpark while your mates are in the back drinking fanta and barcardi while listening to the latest clubland cd on a cheap cd player and rubbish speakers in the parcel shelf.

Maybe the noise is coming from not enough handbrake turns?

I knew I should have read the manual when I got it hehe I'll head down to Sarfend on the weekend to remedy it...

if it's chirping than it's usually the release bearing.

Just fixed mums Honda with the same problem.
