Still not starting
Discussion
Hi all
Still have a problem with my 280
It starts fine from cold, take it for a run and when I turn it off it will start again. Leave it for 20 mins or so and it tries at first then thats it, nothing. Leave it to go cold and it will start fine. When it wont start on the key, give it a tow and it bump starts straight away.
Ive fitted a new fuel pump, renewed the earths to the block and chassis and fixed a bad connection on the fuel pump relay.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Mark

Hi Ziga
Sorry missed the joke Mark 280i ?
Thanks for your response. Yes, new plugs and leads. Doesn't cut out when hot and goes like stink up hills. Drives ace.
Thanks

Mark II,
Air leak on hose to plenum.
How are your plugs?
If they are light brown you could be running lean.
Cold starting would not be affected due to cold start injector and the extra air/fuel from AAD being open.
If plugs are blueish then check that the sensor plate is not too low. Bend the spring to raise it a bit. (If it is)
After that it is really fuel pressure.
You could check to see if ADD is stuck open (although I doubt that, or your hot idle would be so high it would be undrivable.) Unless of course you adjusted it dowm

Sorry. Not been clear. Turns over fine, just doesn't fire until its cooled down.
Thanks
Mark

Does it turn over when you say its dead ,if not I would be looking at the starter motor,I'm not sure where yours is on the Ford engine but on the rover its bang next to the manifold, great design!
Which is a classic sign of a baked starter motor.
Car starts fine first time then when you turn it off it starts again, but leave it for a short while and the latent heat under the bonnet cooks the starter. Leave it to cool down and it starts again. Same thing was happening with my old 350, changed the unit and it was fine, consider wrapping the starter motor.

Suppose that could explain low voltage at the fuel pump (8V) when the fault occurs.
Thanks for all your help.
Ill try the starter but still open to more ideas.
Cheers
