This for the rear

It is very highly recommended and incredibly bright. Don't take my word for it- search for smart superflash or planet bike superflash (US version).

For the front, a nice 20-30 lux or equivalent lumens/candle power would be adequate for the city and on unlit roads -(circa £20)

I've got one of those - it's fit-inducing bright - you won't be dissapointed.

I remember when i was a kid, the lights which were kinetically powered by the side wall of your tyres.

All well and good until you get a puncture in the dark :X

In all fairness to them, they were bloody bright though, when you were at full chat!
