Im travelling to normandy in april and im trying to find the cheapest ferry deal, im not too fussed about where i depart from or arrive as long as costs are kept down. Would i be better just turning up to the docks and hoping for a space, or would i be better booking through some sort of agent?

If you're not fussed, then take Norfolk Lines to Dunkirk. Mind you, then you'll pay a fortune in fuel and tolls.

The cheapest crossing to Normandy is to use LD Lines to Le Havre (or perhaps Newhaven-Dieppe) - day crossings are cheaper than night crossings.

I've never heard of anyone turning up and getting a cheap ticket - I've never heard anyone trying it!

I find aferry.com quite good for comparing routes and prices. Cheapest I've found on the longer crossings is Newhaven-Dieppe as previously mentioned.

The ferry from Portsmouth-Caen used to be great, but it's a while since I last used it. We used to call the the "Boogie Ferry", because the DJ used to play great (Read Rock) music.

It's Brittany Ferries, so while the service is great - so is the cost wink

We use it regularly to reach our house in France.

As others have said mind the road tolls , there are some bridges down there that are 4 quid for a 1km bridge .

We go on the LD Lines night boat, Portsmouth- Le Havre which works out at 400 quid return for four with sleeper cabins on the way out and comfy seats on the return (late afternoon, quicker crossing) Looking forward to trying their new boat in June.
