Guys I went out this morning to open my service bonnet, but I believe it's been locked (only bought the car Friday) I have tried putting my ignition key in to no avail (well I haven't pushed to hard, I guess I'll wait and see what you guys say). Is there another key for it?

Cheers,

Brad.

Certainly has a key on a MK2, but I never lock mine... If you get a key tie it to a piece of string or something ... You don't want to drop it when you unlock it. The outer edge of lever presses in, if its locked then its solid....then lift to pull the lever to move the catch backwards to open.

It's like a big suitcase key, not the ignition key.

Yes, is a flat siver key,( on mine anyway,) as said above, or like a padlock or filing cabinet key. Think you need the key to lock it so the guy must have had it. You should be able to see the small rod move back out the latch when you lift the lever if it's unlocked.

The catches at the corners can also be quite stiff to pull free. Sure it's definately locked?

A looped cable tie is the best thing for the corners .

If its not locked you should be able to open it as mentioned above. If it is locked you're welcome to try my key if you fancy a trip to the Newmarket area?

Brad, press the lock barrel (silver bit) in, handle should then pop up a few mm, then grab the handle and pull, should release then. Failing that I have a spare key and they all seem to be the same! I'm in Essex too. Hope that helps. J.

When I bought my car, the previous owner advised me to never lock it. In fact, he told me not to push the little black release lever in, as pushing the lock in to release it might cause the locking mechanism to "drop".. Apparently, these locks are known to fail and are a real nightmare to replace.

Every time I take it back from servicing the little lever is pushed in, so I suspect that if it was a known issue, the garage people would know better and not push it in, right?

Has anybody's lock failed? Or was the previous owner being over-cautious??

New one on me, never had a problem.

OP. Where in Essex are you? If there's nobody closer I'm just outside Bishop's Stortford, north of Harlow.

If it gets tricky I can come for a drive. Once it's unlocked you're done. Let me know.
