Rear view Camera
Discussion
I am considering fitting a rear view camera, and I would like to know others experiences here?
Seems that a 180 degree version is best, and with night vision. Resolution is also important as is overall clarity.
There are quite a few around so I am looking for the best available....
Annecdotes anyone?
cheers

I fitted one last year. Again, not as good as I had hoped. I would call it a reversing camera, do not think in anyway it could be as good as a rear view mirror you find in every other car!
I don't have reversing lights (as most Ults didn't, I assume people with the LED lights have) so for me the night vision part is good for shunting around carparks etc in the dead of darkness. I went for the more expensive CCD version too, although I was not overly impressed with the quality of the image, and with the wide angle bit (mine is only 120deg) you see things that are close but detail in anything past 20yards or so is not great.
So, in conclusion, it is better than nothing at all.

There are now some really nifty rear-view mirror replacements and I was toying with with this as an idea to improve on or supplimenting using the external mirrors.

So this unit can be fitted where you would have a mirror normally in a car. Teeny bit big but looks to be room enough (unless you have a very big head!)
Saw one of these units at the recent Boat and Caravan show, and it was very clear. So coupled to a top-notch camera this might be worthwhile?

Can you see flashing blue/white lights behind you clear enough I don't have reversing lights (as most Ults didn't, I assume people with the LED lights have) so for me the night vision part is good for shunting around carparks etc in the dead of darkness. No, they are always too far behind
?
Not sure if you could (for blue lights), the detail is not that great with a car that is a normal distance behind. At dusk it gets interesting, when the camera flips into night mode then gets hit by bright lights and flikers of the setting sun.

My monitor is identical to that one apart from the "Vision" label, but my picture is nowhere near as "crisp" as that in the picture (but my camera was rather cheap!)https://vision-uk.co.uk/productPage.php?productId=...

I have a 120 degree camera but am looking for a 60 degree one because with 120 degs even someone up your a**se looks miles away! With 180 degs you would probably only spot a double decker bus if it was feeling the heat from your exhausts!
hi
i have had a rear cammera on my car for a while now... There was a thred i had up before showing the photos.
When looking for a camera, most are wide angle lenses and no good for using as a rear view mirrow alternative.. The one I fitted was only a 90 degree lens(not sure 80 or 90) where most are130-150 degrees wide so although great for reversing, they did not show a car 20 yards away... I can see a cop car, but limited to 100 yards.. if you get a decent enough screen you can zoom the image a bit but loose picture quality..
As said already cool with the night time vision to make sure you dont reverse into a bollard.. the downside is direct sunlight and headlights behind blur the screen...

I was looking into this earlier but as a user of CCTV in one of my businesses I find that the image is nothing like as good as a rear view mirror. If you get a camera with a long range to pick up the blue lights then it is useless for reversing and vice-verse.
I have decided to go down the route of wing mounted mirrors as the door mounted one's are of very little use on track.

Back in my police days, our cars were fitted with some pretty good camera systems, the rear view is now ccd 480 lines sony sensor - so my old partner tells me. This is the one i have just ordered.
So ill let you know how soon i can pick up the blue lights and how many seconds it takes me to loose them too!

ok - new camera has arrived and is exactly what i ordered, however its quite a bit larger than expected. Any ieas where it can be mounted? Need it to be subtle.
Approx size of a tennis ball
looks identical to the one in this link

If you cannot find a suitable location as packaged, you might consider taking it apart and repackaging. I'm unable to get to a decent specification page for the camera, but if you are going for a fixed mount, you may be able to strip out a bunch of the gimbal bulk. Then pull the camera out from the LED cluster, and you will likely have something relatively small you can drop behind a panel without much trouble. The IR illuminators probably have a range of 20-30 feet, which won't be of much use on the road (and will be pointless with headlights shining up your tailpipe anyway). If it's the parking lot obstacles that you want to see, your back up lights will likely illuminate sufficiently well. If you do want IR illumination, you could install IR LED's seperately from the camera. Just a couple thoughts. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out. I will be following in your footsteps soon.
