Hi all really need help please have a ford focus 2001 1.8 zetec with a overheating/Fan problem

The problem is the radiator is over heating the first i knew about this was steam coming out of bonnet/engine, the radiator top hose had split so i replaced this and when starting engine again noticed the radiator cooling fans were not working, i guess this is why it overheated in the first place? however when i turn the A/C on both fans start spinning and engine/radiator cools down.

The temperature gauge in the dash never goes above halfway even when it starts to overheat/steam?

ive checked the thermostat as i thought this might be the problem but the engine and radiator are both warming up at the same time so the thermostat must be working?

Any help would be really really appreciated.

Hi mate, I have a 2001 fiesta zetec and i had a problem with the cooling fan which i solved by replacing the cylinder head temperature sensor. The fan is controlled by the ecu which gets its readings from this sensor so if it is faulty it could cause the fan not to come on. The sensor was only about £30 and is easy to change so it might be worth a try.

you might find there is 2 sensors. One for the ecu to control the fan and one for the gauge. Thats how it is on our fiesta. They are not expensive, so change both if thats the case. Does the engine 'actually' get red hot and the rad? do you have a leak in the rad as well causing steam, as the only place that should let the pressure release is in the expansion tank cap

I am not sure where it is on the 1.8 zetec but on my 1.6 zetec it is inbetween the two spark plugs on the left hand side of the engine, you will see a lead going there just pull that off carefully as the wire going to the sensor is not very long.

Had a good look and there is nowhere for it to go inbetween the spark plugs where else could it be located?

Usually they are somewhere in the thermostat housing

Is Zetec a trim level or the engine model? On a 2001 1.8 I'd say it's a Duratec engine, not a Zetec?

Lots of ford engines were labelled duatec and were actually a zetec. Thats how it is on my 58 plate fiesta ................2001 Focus is definately a zetec.
