SWMBO has decided to come along on a trip to Singapore next month and will probably want to use her mobile phone to stay in touch with me (I'll be working) and home. Obviously using a UK-based SIM will be prohibitively expensive - does anyone have a recommendation for a global roaming SIM or a local Singapore SIM provider ?

There are a couple of local telcos but SingTel cards are widely available. I think you can even get them at the currency exchange desks at the airport. The SingTel ones are called Hi! cards:

And the you buy top-ups when they run out:

Lots of places have the top-ups but the SIM cards might be a bit more difficult to find. I bought mine from a phone shop. You must have your passport with you when you purchase the SIM card.

Rather OT is the availability of pukka dual-SIM phones which take two cards at one with both active. You can't get them in the UK but I've bought two & they're excellent if you need your UK & a local contact number.

Thanks for the info. Mr. P.

I've done a bit of hunting too and it looks like M1 have a good deal on PAYG cards which includes free(!) calls to the UK.

Quick update - the first mobile phone counter we found was the MobileOne desk at the airport near the hotel shuttle desk.

$15 (Sg) for a prepaid card with $18 credit on it and 20 free SIMS (had to remind the salesman that he had a cheaper option than the $50 and $30 cards on display wink )- two cards purchased in exchange for cash + a swipe of the passport to satisfy local law.

Calling UK landlines cost 8c using the special dialling prefix which routes the call over a VOIP network. Recommended.
Data usage included at something like 0.2c per 25kb.
